Purge Tower as a 3d model possibility

Hi all,

Very new to 3d Printing as i have ordered the MultiColor and the MK2S but not yet received either.

And appologies if it is already achievable.

Is there any way to use a 3D model as the purge tower so that the filament is actually usuable for something that doesnt need a particular colour scheme?

I know it would increase time but is could still benefit quite a few people.

Sounds like a cool idea. You could have a nice gradient thing going on. The model would have to be at least the same height and enough material needs to be purged each layer.

I think Prusa is working on integrating wiping with the infill/supports, but don't quote me on this, I read about this in the youtube comment section..

waste block use.

It would be nice if we could print something else with the waste block, say you are printing a model then with the waste print something else. This way it is not a total waste.

Re: Purge Tower as a 3d model possibility

The problem with using an object as the waste tower is it has to be sized according to the max number of color changes needed on any given layer. 2 colors are much easier to do this with than 4, even then every dual color single nozzle printer I have ever seen/used has either a waste tower or purge buckets placed to the side.

Say that this was a possibility, the resulting purge tower "model" would be a horrible mess of colors that you would throw out anyway.

Prusa should consider this idea, the waste quantity is very high for complex models. I would like to be able to print simple models from the waste, like a raspberry pi case, plastic replacement parts that do not have to look great, etc.

I am still considering to buy the 4 color add-on, I'm not convinced also due to the waste issue.

The problem is the shape.

Your model is 10cm high. Your raspberry Pi case is 3cm high.

How can this possibly work?

There is also a precise volume of filament that needs to be purged for the color change. Even using this as infill for the model being printed would be very problematic.

This could work in many ways. The slicer can suggest a number of copies of your waste model to meet the requirements. It could also print a smaller more sparse waste tower which only steps in when the waste model is not enough. Obviously any tower needs to be built from the ground up but it can be mostly air.
