Multimaterial Upgrade - Extruder Calibration Per Extruder

Hi Guys/Gals,

So i'm trying to get started with HIPS as a support material and have been having some issues with it clogging in the multiplexer. The HIPS doesn't retract fully and sits there until it mushrooms on the end which means it can't be unloaded since it's jammed in the multiplexer. So my first thought of course was to check that E4 is calibrated and extruding/retracting correctly so I started on Extruder 1 using this guide ( https://mattshub.com/2017/04/19/extruder-calibration/ ) and all was well. I was able to save the correct E-step value using M500 and reset the machine to confirm it stuck for Extruder 1.

My question for you Gurus is how do I check and calibrate the rest of the extruders? I've changed extruders in the printer settings but my M503 just spits back the setting that were saved for E1.

I've cruised around the forums and found one post that basically came down to "check your extruder screw tension"....which of course I have and didn't seem to answer the OP's original question that was similar to mine.

Thanks for the help!

I may be wrong but the way it works I don't believe this is possible (yet?). The extruder switchover is part of the GCODE inserted upon material change, the machine doesn't really know it has 4 separate extruders. I guess you could send the values per extruder along with the tool change GCODE every time, but the tool change gcode with the separate values would have to be set in firmware then recompiled.

The Bondtech drive pulleys should be pretty much spot on for all 4 extruders; basically there should be very little difference (if any).

If you find there is a significant difference, there is not a lot you can do other than to run KISS + post-processor which does allow individual extruder calibration.

Thanks for the reply Peter!

So in theory if E1 is calibrated then the rest should be as well? It was close, but not quite spot on...extruded 98.4mm in a 100mm run.

You could also do this with Simplify3D and filaswitch post-processor by adding appropriate e-steps gcode to the tool change script. Just for completeness. 🙂

Imho, each "extruder" have to be calibrated since filament feed is unlikely to be exactly the same for every motor.

That being said, I'm not sure you can set a per extruder stepping.

What is the actual default E steppes for the bondtech MMU setup, 140 ?
Tried to look at the the sourcecode, but there seems to be so many version of it :/

Mine was indeed 140, not sure it is the default value for everybody. I use Hyperfine modded firmware, maybe this is different here.
