Has anyone tried using a 0.25 nozzle on MM?

I was just about to order the MM upgrade when I remembered the 0.25mm nozzle that I bought to experiment with. One the main uses for my printer is small wargame models and some of them look like they could work better with 0.25. When I asked about this with online chat I was told (I'm paraphrasing here) It should - but unsupported - make that not recommended - etc. Translation we don't know; we never tried it.

This may be a moot point because I still haven't tried the 0.25 to see if it gives me what I want. But if it works I want to know - Does the new bowden extruder have the pushing power to feed a 0.25 nozzle in single mat mode, or would I have to rebuild the hot end back to direct drive to switch nozzles?

The best news would be if someone has successfully used a 0.25 in full MM mode. I would accept having to use single mode for the smaller nozzle but the rebuild option may be a deal breaker.

In single mode it is definitely possible, I printed some small gears from nylon by modifying the 0.4 profile a bit (especially decreasing the extrusion of the priming stripe at the beginning of the print).

I MM mode I think there are some problems with the wipe tower however I never tried it.

It will work. I used 0.15mm nozzle in single mode with PLA. It worked perfectly.

Stupid question, I am sure, but I have a lot to learn.
Why would someone like to use a smaller nozzle?

Re: Why a smaller nozzle?

A smaller nozzle will allow finer detail. But the tradeoff is longer print times.

BTW Thanks everyone for the answers. It looks like I will be getting the MM upgrade.

Also remember that if you are slicing with Slic3r MMU you are limited to 0.15mm layer height or higher, you cannot go lower when printing with the wipe tower. There are however no limitations in Singlemode as was stated before.

Re: Has anyone tried using a 0.25 nozzle on MM?

0.25mm diameter nozzle will most likely not work with our multi-material setup: The filament exchange sequence has been fine tuned for a 0.4mm nozzle and it will most certainly fail with a 0.25mm diameter nozzle for many reasons.

We have a new hire (Lukas) working on the wipe tower, he should one day implement some generic way of configuring the filament exchange sequence. Once we have that, we may start experimenting with the 0.25mm nozzle. It is still possible though, that we will not be able to get the filament exchange sequence working with the 0.25mm nozzle at all with the current E3D nozzle due to a high volume melt zone and high viscosity of the filament flow in regard to the the 0.25mm dmr orifice.
