Firmware 3.0.12-RC2 - MK2 Multi Material, MK2/S & MK1

EDIT: This version is superseded by FW 3.0.12 FINAL, please see http://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk2-multimaterial-f26/firmware-3-0-12-final-mk2-multi-material-t5857.html

Hi guys,
we just released a new firmware version 3.0.12-RC2 and here are the most important changes:

MK2 Multi Material, MK2/S and MK1 are supported! No printer is left behind. There is even a special build of MK2 Multi Material with older 10a Rambo in our test lab to ensure all printers are covered 😉

Multi Material filament unload at stop print sequence is now selectable. In the previous version of the firmware, the printer fully unloaded all filaments at the end of a stop print sequence. This isn't always necessary, therefore starting 3.0.12-RC2 printer will ask you, which extruders (filaments) you want to unload.

Multi Material extruder choice is introduced by a new G-code "T?". This code must be part of G-code start sequence and then the printer will ask, which extruder you want to use on your Multi Material printer for single material print.

Selftest is fixed for heater/thermistor test. The procedure was failing sometimes now works correctly. Our devs prolonged heating period to safely distinguish between working and faulty printer.

XYZ calibration is now more detailed. In previous versions, the failure of calibration process often ended up with the message "Consult the manual". However, now the printer informs you for example that the first four points are out of reach of the P.I.N.D.A. probe. For debugging purposes, it is also possible to see details of XYZ calibration in printer's menu. (Support -> XYZ cal. details)

Filament unload is using a different sequence. Previously the single material filament unload was started by slight extrusion. We observed issues with some filaments, so in this release, there is no extrusion or ramming prior to the unload.

Happy printing!

Re: Firmware 3.0.12-RC2 - MK2 Multi Material, MK2(S) & MK1

Jakub

Multi Material filament unload at the end of the print is now optional. In the previous version of the firmware, the printer fully unloaded all filaments after the print was finished. This isn't always necessary, for example, if you want to print the object again or use the same colour combination, therefore starting 3.0.12-RC2 printer will ask you before unloading.

Does this mean that the printer will not respond after a print until a selection is made and a button pressed? If that's the case, it's not a good firmware design.

Filament unload is using a different sequence. Previously the single material filament unload was started by slight extrusion. We observed issues with some filaments, so in this release, there is no extrusion or ramming prior to the unload.

I have filament which absolutely need "ramming" before unload. I have others which don't and the ramming just causes the extruder to skip. I would prefer to have the skipping on some materials and good unload on others than to have to keep dis-assembling the printer when an unload fails.

Looks as though this firmware is not for me - I haven't the time to correct these faults at the moment.

Peter

Hi Peter,
regarding filament unload, this is valid for Stop print sequence. I'm sorry for the confusion, the text in the first post was corrected.

about ramming during filament unload it is not possible to choose, for now, I forwarded your request to firmware developer. It might be possible to create custom unload with a G-code, but I need to try it first.

I had a return of the thermal runaway issue that I hadn't seen for a few releases.

I've dropped back to May's MK2 firmware...

Just an FYI

Hi Jakub

Thanks for the quick response.

Please note that I am still waiting for a method to cancel the load process.

This is what happens:

Select "Load Filament"
Scroll down to the required extruder and press the button.

Unfortunately, because the rotary encoder is not always precise and occasionally delayed, the wrong extruder is selected. The only option at this point is to press the button and load a filament which is already loaded and with a cold hot end, this can cause some issues.

At the point where the extruder is "clicking" while picking up the filament end, there needs to be a "Cancel" option available, with the default of "Load".

Maybe something along the lines:

"Please insert filament"
"and press the button"
"> Load"
" Cancel"

I did mention this 6 months ago and Pavel thought it was a good idea, but it seems to have gotten "lost" somewhere.

Thanks

Peter

That's a great idea, Peter 😉 I will remind Pavel, however, he is quite busy at the moment.

Just had this happen too - so back to RC1 for me too.

[Updated]

And just had this happen with the old RC1. Odd - was completely fine the last couple of days but perhaps the RC2 upgrade was just coincidence.

Is my assumption correct that the 3.0.12-RC2 is for "non - multi - material" - printers as well ?

Yes, all the variants are included in the zip.

Can you please post your temperature and material settings? Also what kind of object are you printing? Thanks

I was printing a small PLA object (a small 20mm diameter, 10mm high cylinder, partial open at the top) - filament temp was 210C and the bed was 70C. I've since moved back to RC2 and calibrated the PID for the bed. Not issues since then.

Hi,
we have the national holiday this week, but I've talked to our firmware developer and he is working on it. From what've tested, the issue didn't occur.

The name of the zip file will be corrected, thanks for the feedback 😉

Re: Firmware 3.0.12-RC2 - MK2 Multi Material, MK2(S) & MK1

just got a ""BED THERMAL RUNAWAY"" error with the 3.0.12-RC2.
print went on ok and stopped suddenly with this error at the LCD.

this happened at a print where the heatbed should stay at 105°C, which should be no problem with my printer. I've previously tested the heatbed and was able to achieve steady 119°C with it.
unfortunately I didn't monitor the temperature of the bed permanently, I only saw (approx. 20 seconds later) at the info screen a bed temperature of only 96°C.

just checked the heatbed connector at the rambo, but everything is fine there.
and of course, the thermistor is still in place.

never got this with the 3.0.11 before.

going to test it again with the 3.0.12-RC2... and have a closer look at what happens.

________________________________

💡
update: seems to be no firmware problem ! temperature of the heatbed really drops down to approximately 95°C, even with a 100% mosfet duty cycle (red heatbed led permanently on).
➡ so there has to be a drop at the +12V voltage provided by the psu... which seems to suffer a little bit at environmental temperatures of 35°C and high current consumption at the hotend (prints acutally @ 242°C) and the heatbead.

I started to get the Bed Thermal Runaway message today. Still trying to find the cause.

Re: Firmware 3.0.12-RC2 - MK2 Multi Material, MK2(S) & MK1

I'm in the same boat. I just now got the random BED THERMAL RUNAWAY ERROR three times consecutively just 10 minutes into a 4.5 hr print. Seems a bit random because I had just successfully printed the same part previously many times. I've never had this error before. Firmware 3.0.11

I did notice my screen showed my bed temp was stuck at 109 for a few minutes when it was set for 115 and had already been properly maintaining 115 during the first 6 minutes of the print. I have no problem maintaining 125 usually, so I'm really not sure what is going wrong between 6-10 minutes into the print.

I have been running the i3 Mk2s for 1.5 weeks straight, 24hrs a day. Great little printer!

Any ideas folks? I'm going to try to run a bed PID tune if possible, not sure what the code is, need to try to find out.
Maybe it's part of an industrial sabotage scheme by some competitor to wreak havoc on Prusa's printer farm and customer's units... I see there are a number of very recent posts on this issue. Mmm, that might be a long shot!

EDIT; I PID tuned the bed, but that did not help. The bed is only able to maintain 105 degree temp for some reason. Any ideas what might be the issue?

Re: Firmware 3.0.12-RC2 - MK2 Multi Material, MK2(S) & MK1

I just had the same problem. Found that the Terminal Block that plugs into the rambo board that goes to the heated bed was melted. Lucky that I happen to have one around. Replaced it and it works fine now. I'd check that out. My problem was just like what you guys are talking about. It would heat up for a while then shut down with the same error message talked about here.
