Chamfer/Taper PTFE tubes?

Before I begin the MM upgrade (I'm waiting for final slic3r/fw to be released), do I need to manually chamfer or taper any of the PTFE tubes? I'm reading quite a few posts about problems with the upgrade. I see the PTFE tube inside the heatbreak looks to be chamfered already.

When I asked on chat they said nothing needs to be manually chamfered/tapered and want to confirm, thanks.

Re: Chamfer/Taper PTFE tubes?

I have been having problems because my taper seems to have a step at the bottom, which makes the filaments jam on advancement...

I know I have a lovely sharp taper cutter, shame I can't find it!

I tryed everything to get it to print. All it does is jam. i'm boxing it up and going back to the single extruder mode. this setup is shit. 😡

Yeah, it makes you wonder how so many of us have it working without any problems.

Have a look at the blockages thread here: http://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk2-multimaterial-f26/blockage-troubleshooting--t4643.html and tell us what your problems are.

I tryed all that and no success. it wont even print the first layer. I'm so frustrated that i took it off and i am printing in single extruder mode again.
it is printing great in this mode.I love this printer.

Re: Chamfer/Taper PTFE tubes?

fingers crossed.

my ptfe cold end liner was not tapered or chamfered at the bottom. and poorly chamfered at the top.

it is now hopefully properly chamfered and tapered...

and filament seems to pass through it much more easily.

strangely My extruder temperature seems to be inaccurate...
I normally print PLA at 200 to 215 degrees.
I have used all of these PLA samples before, but the filament doesn't seem to extrude at 215 degrees,
I tried to sample the actual temperature with an infra red thermometer but the highest temperature reading I could get was 90 degrees. if accurate this is way below the displayed temperature on the LCD
I am currently getting the printer to work at displayed 245 first layer and displayed 240 successive layers

is there an easy way to check the accuracy of the extruder thermistor?

Interesting, so that's used to taper, what tool can be used to chamfer?

Strangely, I had exactly the same issue occur, but during a print. One filament (PR White) was printing fine and then suddenly started skipping. I eventually ended up extruding that filament at 235 degrees. I was printing a 2-colour model at the time; the other filament worked fine at 205.

I eventually threw away that spool; it may have been old and damp or it may have been where the manufacturer was changing over to ABS. Really don't know.

If you put a piece of tape on the heater block you may get a more accurate reading from the thermometer; I doubt there is an issue with the thermistor; more likely to be the cable if there is a problem.

What happened during the first layer? A more detailed explanation would be really useful.

Joan, this is crazy; we all have 3d printers, yet nobody has yet designed and printed a chamfering tool that will take a pencil sharpened blade...

I will have to see if I can find an old pencil sharpened and come up with something...

Re: Chamfer/Taper PTFE tubes?

Hi. My first layer starts to extrude than just stops. The extruder starts to skip. when i stop the print it wont unload. i take the hot end apart and it has a ball lodged in the champher in the hot end. i took the hot end completly apart and checked it but it seems fine. i am totaly lost as for the reason it does this. So i reinstalled the old single extruder and it is printing perfectly. I guess i got a dud extruder. my next step is to put the old extruder in the multi kit. i just don't have time at the moment. i have to catch up on the prints for customers.

Re: Chamfer/Taper PTFE tubes?

I had lots of issues with jamming when I first got the kit. After a dozen frustrating jams, all of the sudden it didn't jam anymore. Almost inexplicably. I believe the issue is with the printed part with the sticker on it. I think the filament path was a bad print (tolerances were terrible on a lot of the parts) and the filament finally had stripped away the plastic in the way.

This is just a theory, but might be worth trying to smooth out the path to the hot end.

First thing I would say is that you probably need to set aside a few days without any customer prints so that you can get this upgrade working properly. There's no point in attempting to upgrade when you are under pressure to get prints out.

You say the "first layer starts to extrude and then just stops," There must be a "trigger" for it to stop; what's happening, is it doing a filament change? It may be a good idea for you to upload the (zipped up) gcode so we can have a look for any clues in there.

Re: Chamfer/Taper PTFE tubes?

i'm trying to print the benchie that came with the multi kit. The filament is not doing a change it is just laying down the first layer. i also tryed to print the bearing that came with the kit but it acts the same. it seems to jam right after it retracts. i think the gap caused by the champfer is giving it a place to jam. i also think that if the heat break went up the hot end further the diameter of the tube would be the same giveing the filament no place to jam.
Gaps in the system can't be good.
