Random Y Axis Layer Shift

Random Y Axis Layer Shift
Prusa i3 upgrade to an MK2.
Files have been sliced in both Simplify 3D and slic3r, same problem.
This problems happens randomly but it affects about 50% of my short prints and all of my prints that take a long time.

In the attached pictures the purple print came out perfectly but the silver print shifted. In the larger silver print you can see where it shifted positions and continued to print. This problem occurs randomly on any layer. It can be at the start, the middle or near the end of a print. What could be causing this problem?

Chloe

Check the belt pulley screws are tight.

Ensure no cables are obstructing movement.

Try printing using High-Power mode.

Re: Random Y Axis Layer Shift

Hi Chloé

It seems to affect only one direction. Is it the X-axis or the Y-axis ?

Chloe,

Does it correspond to the location of your filament? I was having similar problems with a different printer but it was caused by friction on my filament spool. It would cause the extruder to have to work too hard and then jump and offset.

Re: Random Y Axis Layer Shift

I've seen this problem in my printer once. I tightened up the Y-axis belt and the problem mostly went away.

Other things to check: Are your Y-axis guide rails parallel? (I used a digital caliper to check mine) Is the Y-axis pulley centered so that the belt doesn't rub on either side of the pulley?

I've also had to fix the above, now I don't see any Y-axis shifting in my prints.

Dimensions PNG

and an 8 inch (200mm) or greater caliper is recommended.

Stealing the thread a bit... when talking about layer shift, anyone has an explanation to this right leg?

Re: Random Y Axis Layer Shift

That's not a layer shift. It looks like ... glitch in the Matrix. 😉

Re: Random Y Axis Layer Shift

That's very close to what happens a lot with the legs of the Frog, usually the left one.

I believe that when printing, one side of the arm make a kind of sharp angle, making the border cooling down faster that the middle, and make it prone to bend a bit, similar to warping. Then the nozzle can interact with it when coming from the side, and shifting a bit when continuing to print on top on it.
