PEI sheet change - why remove the old one?

I have an old MK2S. Still working fine, but the prints are not sticking as they used to. I've tried acetone, cleaning with IPA regularly etc. Still, I'm starting to believe that it would be a good idea to have a new surface. I'm looking at the instructions, and the removal of the old sheet and disassembling the printer seems quite involving. What is the reason I can't just put a new sheet over the old one?

Did you try scuffing it with a rough side of a dish sponge or a Scotchbrite pad (fine grit)? It will make first layers a little more matte with visible "scars" but may immensely improve adhesion.
