Blown Stepper Driver help

[Factory Assembled] Prusa i3 MK2 that isn't used all that often, but is very well cared for. Wanted to print something the other day, flipped the power switch on, and then one of those lovely little puffs of smoke came from the controller board. Everything was running and printing fine the last time I used it, but I guess it had other ideas for me this time.

My question is "Any ideas what could have caused this?".

I attached a picture, and I assume it's the "Z-Axis" driver that blew... but the weird thing is the motors all spins freely when not powered, and even with the blown driver you can still jog the Z-Axis from the settings menu.

There is also a quiet but noticeable high pitch tone coming from the board when powered now, and even though you can still jog the XYZ positions I don't think it's recognizing the "stops" anymore.

Just looking for some thoughts or suggestions. I have no problem replacing the board, but I want to make sure the issue isn't because of a fault elsewhere and blow a new board.

Thanks!

Re: Blown Stepper Driver help

There's a couple of possibilities:

1. Bad luck
2. One of the Z motor cables is pinched on the frame and eventually grounded (shorted) two cables for one coil, putting a short across the driver output.
