Blob of Death resulting in dead printer

Hi Everyone,

I had a blob of death form on the hotend of my faithful old workhorse Mk2S.  I heated up the hotend to try to remove said blob and i'm pretty sure i  broke the thermistor wires as I was attempting this surgery.  The printer screen immediately went blank, the power cut, and it has refused to turn ever since.  I decided it was an opportunity to upgrade to a shiny new revo 6 hotend, but now that I've installed it, the printer still wont turn on.

Any thoughts?  is there fuses somewhere I should check?  is the sudden power death typical when a thermistor wire is cut?

Thanks for reading

Dave

No, a broken Thermistor, normally results in a Mintemp error

A broken fuse is usually the result of using a brass brush or similar to clean a hot end, whilst the power is still switched on.

Good result, you short the power, and a fuse blows. replace fuse and continue...

BAD result, you short the heater power to the Thermistor circuit, and you let the magic smoke out of the controller... as well as breaking the fuse...

Joan,

Fingers crossed for Mintemp OR  broken fuse... not both!

regards Joan

Good to know Joan!  I don't know how many times I've cleaned the nozzle with a brass brush while it was turned on!  Got a new fuse this morning and it has started right up.  Now I'm just waiting on some help from E3D about firmware update for the Revo 6.  But at least the LCD turns on now!

thanks for taking the time to educate me!

Dave

It's quite easy to accidentally short the heater power to the thermistor circuit, especially if you use a brass wire brush to clean the hotend, as recommended by Prusa. If this happens, don't worry—there's a fairly simple fix as long as you're comfortable with basic soldering. I’ve shared step-by-step instructions on how to do it in this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/prusa3d/comments/1aqm1jj/comment/lrp0rdw/
