BED THERMAL RUNAWAY & broken heater cable

I had a print stop with "BED THERMAL RUNAWAY". Trying again gave "BED PREHEAT ERROR". The bed thermistor appeared to work -- it reported a reasonable temperature. The bed did not warm and the red LED on the bed connector did not light up anymore. Self test said "Selftest error ! Heater/Thermistor Not connected. Selftest failed."

The heater cable had broken where it connects to the bed. To fix it, I

  • Took the heat bed connector cover off.

  • Stripped the insulation back from the broken wire.

  • Heated the solder pad with a soldering iron enough to fish the broken wire bits out.

  • Splayed out the ends of the stripped wire a bit.

  • Melted the solder on the pad as best as I could & stuck the wire into it.

  • Added more solder on top.

  • Put the heater connector cover back on.
  • After this, the printer worked fine again.

The repaired side of the cable is a bit shorter than the undamaged side. This caused the undamaged side to stick out a little bit under the bed connector. This didn't seem to hurt anything.

(Posting this here in hopes that it is helpful to future folks searching for "BED THERMAL RUNAWAY", etc.)

    Thank you for your post.
    Many had this to experience....
    And still...
People wil not look for "bed preheat error" or "thermal runaway" but rather
posting at least three times (or more) per week crying for help.
