The upgrade from MK2S to MK2.5S is cheaper and includes the filament sensor. This option is specifically described as a cheaper upgrade than the more expensive upgrade from the MK2S to MK3S.

Because there are many changes between MK2x to MK3

MK2x ==> MK3x (x ... different evolutionary steps of the printer)
12V ==> 24V
completely new printerframe
new microcontroller board with new features (power panic, ...)
6 fixation points between y-axis carrier and heatbed to 9 points
...

So If you really want to have a MK3S it is (in my opinion) cheaper to by a new MK3S and sell yout old MK2S. If you want to get a printer with a lot of the features of the MK3S take the upgrade to MK2.5S. It has no powerpanic - I live in Austria and I am printing since 2017 - I never had a problem with that, so the MK2.5S is ok for me.

Yes, it requires some hardware. Beside the additional controller board, the Einsy board was designed for that. Here you can read more details:

no it will also work at 12V

all it does it acting like a switch, when mains is present it makes creates a connnection and passes either 24V or 12Vwhat makes the einsy "special" is that the bed and extruder heater will be disconnected as soon the power panic signals that mains is gone.... its done at the hardware level

on top of that one of the pins on the mcu is also connected to this "line" so that it can act on what happens

Yes what I think too but sad to buy a whole new printer instead of upgrade some parts. It's the purpose of Prusa printer to upgrade without
should pay a new printer each time 🙂

MK3S contain all + printed parts for only 250$ more ?
Need a lot of print time, lot of job at the Prusa factory for assemble a new printer so just can't follow orders but an upgrade it's just put some parts in a package and ship is almost the same price ?
When the new model come OK I can understand but MK3S released beginning of 2019 now we are at the end 2020 probably a new MK4 model come out soon and still a so high price for upgrade an old printer. I like Prusa like his history produce really good printer but upgrade price isn't really fair. I think you can buy all parts for cheaper one by one... Huge order of parts have probably big discount too so 200-300$ should probably be a better upgrade price with some margin remaining to Prusa 🙂 (600$ mk2s + 200$ = 800$ for mk3s still more expensive but an affordable upgrade path... 800$ mk3s upgraded and again 200$ (~2 years after release date) = 1000$ for mk4 still ok maintenance cost for have upgraded parts latest technology and brand new parts.)

I'm alone to think that ?
Prusa win a better margin when you buy the brand new latest model and still win some money on each upgrade but people stay with their Prusa printers for life and not try to switch to another model/brand beacause at 500$ each 2 years you can buy a brand new lower model printer each 2 years with saving money for repair and change some parts. Upgrade is a business too less time consuming but at this price it's almost a no go.

Upgrading MK2 to MK3(s) doesn't really make sense. Most of the parts are different due to to 12V->24V switch. Even Mr Prusa said that. But he still decided to offer this upgrade path for the people who still want to do this anyway.

You need to see it from the different perspective. If you used your MK2 for couple years and the parts need to be replaced anyway due to the heavy usage, you might want to spend $500 for a (let's call it) refurbished MK3 instead of buying a new printer for $750. I think it's a fair price and move from PR. To have this option at all is a huge benefit which you will not find in the wild a lot.

If your MK2 printer is still in good condition, best option is to go the MK2.5(s) route. Because you're pretty close to MK3 printer and can use the same flex sheet. For those people the upgrade costs $150. It's discounted because I don't remember the reason anymore :).
