Upgrade Path

I have the Prusa i3 Mk2 and I am very interested in the Multi Material Upgrade (MMU) 2S. Do I first have to upgrade my printer before adding the MMU 2S? If so, what is the correct path of upgrades?

I see the below on the information page, but I am unclear as to if I have to start with the MK2.5S before I can add the MMU2

Printer Compatibility:

  • Original Prusa i3 MK3S
  • Original Prusa i3 MK2.5S

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: MK3S AND MK2.5S UPGRADE PARTS ARE INCLUDED IN THE MMU2S!

You would need the MK2s to MK2.5s upgrade. It would give you the same extruder set up on the MK3 and the MMU2 uses that extruder design. Plus the 2.5s upgrade gives you the flexible bed. It is highly recommended to first apply the 2.5s upgrade then get used to it. It would not take too long to adjust to the newer set up and to make sure the assembly went well. Then when you are comfortable add on the MMU2s upgrade to the printer.

It is not recommended to do both at the same time, because if there is an error in one part of the build, it can get difficult to identify the problem, and it can be a bit overwhelming to do both at the same time.

Hope this helps.

RE: Upgrade Path

I have an Original Prusa i3 MK2. I took too long to try it and the extruder clogged. I purchased some upgrades and now have time to put them in.

I have an upgrade from 2017 labeled "MK2 MMU to MK2.5/MK3 MMU 2.0". What manual do I use to do the upgrade?
