Mosquito vs new e3d v6

If you were needing to replace your entire hotend assembly for some reason, would you just change to a mosquito hotend instead? For example, a print fail that broke the thermistor and heater cartridge wires, a snapped heatbreak, and possibly damaged threads on the heatsink.

It seems like a better product for someone that switches nozzles often, which I do.

I'm a little skeptical of the claims that it is just a drop in replacement with their mounting bracket, though. Anyone have experience with it?

Look at the dragon hot end on aliexpress. That is a similar hotend but in a carrier that is compatible with the e3d v6 format.

I'm a little surprised to see you recommending 3rd party parts after your comments in the textured sheet thread. 😀 I checked out the TriangleLabs version on AliExpress. It sounds intriguing. Is this a direct drop-in for the E3D V6? No adapters required? No firmware changes required? Any pros or cons to the 50W heater cartridge?

I too took a look at this, then realised, no nickel plated copper heat block, so scrapped the idea.

Normal people believe that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain’t broke, it doesn’t have enough features yet.

Sorry, I just re-read the spec and must have missed it first time, Dragon plated copper block

Hi Bobstro, I don't think I recommended anything...  I  have no experience of the dragon, other than having one in the drawer under my printer bench to play with when I get time...
I merely identified an alternative hot end which appears to be a drop in replacement for the e3dV6 hot end...
the original poster seemed to want to try something different but not have to make a lot of changes...
the Mosquito appears to need more work...  new extruder housing IIRC...

I would not go with the 50 watt heater! I would still use 40Watts.

I have no objection to people trying different build plates,   what upsets me, is people who haven't taken the time to try  their Prusa build plates in simple ways like washing then, then telling everybody who will listen, that they are Junk and the only way forward is to buy new buildplates...  and then calling me a Liar because I can show prints that were successful on the very build plates they are rubbishing!

in fact I have just bought a Chinese magnetic heatbed which appears to be a spin off of the Prusa style heatbeds, for my Chinese Geeetech printer, and I have just bought a powder coated build plate to go on it from someone other than Prusa... because Prusa don't make 220 x 220 heatbeds and build plates...   this is the Geeetech's last chance... if it doesn't work with a Prusa style extruder and Prusa style heatbed, I am going to give up with it

RE: Mosquito vs new e3d v6

there are two versions of the Dragon, one appears to be a V6 replacement, the other appears to be more in line with the Volcano.

I saw the Phaetus hot end at the TCT Show in Birmingham and was impressed with the idea and aparrent quality, but was unable to locate a supplier, even after contacting Phaetus directly, so when I saw the Dragon(which appears to be a Phaetus Clone), I decided to get one to play with.

I am a little concerned with both the Dragon and the Mosquito, because both have five heat transfer paths from the heatblock into the extruder housing, the heatbreak and four locating pins that stop the heatblock rotating...  where as the e3dV6 only has one heatpath (excluding Convection) so I plan to build a temporary(Prusa Mk3s) extruder housing and load it with heater, thermister, e3dV6 hot end assembly, Fan and a Thermocouple in the heatsink fans. to see how hot they get when running. then to the same with the dragon in the same setup, at the same temperature. if the Dragon ends up showing better thermal performance than the V6, I will consider putting it in a printer, if it shows a lot of heat transfer to the aluminium skeleton of the Dragon, because of the four locating pins, I will consider junking the dragon ...

Would love an update when you've tried the Dragon @joantabb! It sounds like an interesting option, and if it mounts cleanly to a cheap printer, maybe worth a shot.

I'm interested too, but will wait until all this corona virus episode dies down, and see what the other side is like!.
