Extruder only upgrade to Mk2.5

I am happy with the Mk2 heatbed and I don't need the magnetic spring steel PEI sheet. But I'd like to use the new print head features like filament sensor and PINDA temperature compensation. My setup will be:

1. Mk2.5 print head
2. Mk2S headbed, Rambo enclosure,rods and bearings.

Thus I'm thinking about JUST upgrading the extruder to Mk2.5, i.e. order:
* PINDA V2, (with adapter cable selfmade)
* Bondtech gear
* Noctua fan
and printing the black Mk2.5 extruder.

Will I be able to use the latest 3.3.1 firmware (supporing PINDA temperature compensation) with that configuration? Does the firmware have any dependencies on the type of heatbed, i.e. whether Mk2/S and Mk2.5 heatbed is used?

PS: When checking the firmware source code I found there is some logic making sure the steel sheet is removed before PINDA probe temperature calibration. Will that have an impact on firmware operation with a Mk2/S heatbed?

Re: Extruder only upgrade to Mk2.5

Hi, I have the same question, cause I also want to keep my original MK42 heatbed.

I have printed the MK2.5 parts (also the new design) and judging from the manual it should work without a problem.

The new firmware will need the speed signal from the noctua fan and the thermistor from the new pinda probe. As well as the new filament sensor. I only have the noctua fan ordered, because the filament sensor can be deactivated in the firmware. I will try to use the old pinda probe, but, if this will not work, I will have to order the new probe too.

So, the question remains, is there a difference in the firmware or in the physical part of the two heatbeds?
From the open source drawings I can not see any differences. And if the location of the magnetic inserts haven't changed, the firmware process should work without problems.

Re: Extruder only upgrade to Mk2.5

I've recently upgraded my Mk2 to a Mk2S and remixed the extruder to include a PINDA V2, the Noctua fan and the R3 improvements. Details at https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3062641 . The printer works fine after the upgrade. I had nozzle issues due to an incorrectly mounted PTFE tube (collet was not pulled out) which are resolved by now.
IMHO the Mk2.5/3 3.3.1 firmware will not work on a Mk2S. From what I have seen in the 3.3.1 code it uses different parameters in finding the bed z calibration and a variety of other places. The least concern will be the self-test failing due to missing fan tacho signals and messages about removing the spring steel sheet. Let me know if it works out for you.
The PINDA V2 requires a temperature calibration backport from Mk2.5 3.3.1 into Mk2 3.1.0 which I have started at https://github.com/baloan/Prusa-Firmware . All PINDA V2 related code is marked with a PINDA_THERMISTOR define so the idea is to copy those parts into 3.1.0. I can compile my version but the firmware flash currently fails. See seperate post in firmware for details.

I've successfully completed the PINDA V2 backport.
Upgrade instructions and stl things on https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3062641 .
