Convert to E3D v6 3mm?
Hello,
I am waiting for my mk2 kit to be shipped. I am wondering what needs to be done to make another x-carriage that has a E3D v6 3mm extruder? I ask because I have a lot of 3mm filament (~ 40 1Kg spools). I already have the extruder. I would like to be able to swap them back and forth easily.
Thanks,

Re: Convert to E3D v6 3mm?
swapping is not likely to be easy, the cabling for the extruder goes above and below the bottom slide rail, so you would have to un-bundle the wiring to get it off, and sort the GT2 belt every time,
simple'st solution, build as 3mm to start, use up the 3mm filament then rebuild as 1.75 mm version...
next simplest is to create a whole new X axis assembly
2 z axis sliders, z leadscrew nuts , x axis smooth rods and bearings, x carriage, extruder sides, filament pressure leaver with bearing, extruder assembly, fans, PINDA, stepper motor for extruder and x axis, GT2 belt, idler and pulley, filament drive wheel, cable ties, nuts screws washers and bolts..., plus x axis endstop, cable support filament, and spiral wrapping.. etc.
then take the z axis top mounts off the printer, disconnect the entire X axis assembly, and lift it off the printer, re attach the new assembly, and reconnect to rambo... replace z xis top mounts and re calibrate...
the STL's for the printed parts are available. I understand the extruder parts need to be reworked, (there are reworked versions available through this forum)

Re: Convert to E3D v6 3mm?
Hi Joan,
Thanks for the advice. I think I will build it as 1.75 mm to start with and get it all working. Then if I am able to locate all the reworked x-carriage parts, swap out the x-carriage for a completely new 3 mm one. I really do have a lot of 3 mm filament. I have a Lulzbot mini and Lulzbot store recently closed out their Esun PLA. I was able to pick up 20 spools for $6.24/ea. for 1Kg spools. They were not the most desirable colors. Most of what I got of that is brown. lol. But I have a lot of other 3 mm filament too.
Any hints to where the reworked files may be on the forum would be most appreciated.
Thanks again,
Kelly

Re: Convert to E3D v6 3mm?
Hi Joan,
I have since received my kit and put it together. It works fantastically. By far better than any of my other printers. So, I am going to keep it as is. I also have a Raise3D N2 which uses 1.75mm so I am just going to buy more 1.75mm and leave my other two printers that use 3mm to use that. I could also buy another mk2 and convert that one... hmmm. Anyway, thanks for the link to the parts. I guess just the other day, I stumbled on to a link where those parts are available. Thanks again!
Best regards,
Kelly
