R6 Mosquito Extruder on MK2.5S

After successfully installing a Mosquito hotend on my MK2.5s using the Slice -recommended modified R4 extruder with no complications, I decided to try out the Mosquito-adapted R6 extruder on Thingiverse,   https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4700747

The extruder printed out OK in ASA and assembled without issue.  In particular, I like the parts cooling fan shroud mounting method a lot better than the R4 - R5 type.  The shroud is based on RH Dreambox's design, which shields the heat block from the parts cooling air.

One thing that gives me pause is that this version of the R6 exposes the top of the Mosquito's heat block to the hotend fan airflow, right by the thermistor.  The previous R4-based Mosquito extruder shields the heat block from the hotend fan, so I'm not sure if this is a good thing.  Nevertheless, the Mosquito doesn't seem to mind, though I am using Slice's 50W heater combined with an original E3D thermistor. Perhaps I'll modify the cooling air path.

The R6 is a substantially different extruder, but the same basic dimensions and mounting points allow use of the same filament sensor as the R4-R5, the same stepper motor, the same Bondtech gears, the same PINDA and the same fans.  Also, it fits the X-carriage without issue.

Put it together, set the PINDA height and the first layer calibration and... it just works, with no surprises.  As with the R4 Mosquito extruder, the standard PRUSA settings work perfectly well.   If one prefers, I suspect the Mosquito would allow considerable tweaking of the settings but I am happy with the standard settings.

So, I printed out a Benchy in PLA and got a pleasant surprise: the customary faint "ringing" visible on the left rear (Portside Aft?) of the wheelhouse is gone!  It was still faintly visible with the Mosquito R4 extruder, but this R6 Mosquito combination seems to have made a very nice 3D Benchy indeed.

The one-handed 20-second nozzle changes are great!  No more E3D Nozzle Change Dread!

Happy Printing!

Apologies to the mods, I had accidentally posted my MK2.5s Mosquito thread in the wrong forum... it should have been here in the MK2.5 forum.

RE: R6 Mosquito Extruder on MK2.5S

KONSUL released an improved variant of the R6 Mosquito extruder, the 6.1.

The 6.1 Mosquito extruder has a redesigned airflow path for the Mosquito hotend, which shields the heat block from the hotend airflow.  A removable grille is provided at the air outlet as well.  The parts cooling duct remains the same RH Dreambox inspired type.  Otherwise, the extruder is an R6 type as used on the MK3S+.

So I printed it out in black and white ASA.  ASA was probably not the best choice for the extruder body as it proved difficult to print but I managed to get a good set of parts.  Put it all together and it seems to work well on my Prusa MK2.5s, bolting right on to the X carriage without issue.

So far, I like it!
