Recommended Filaments

What filament manufacturers does everyone use?  I ordered the Vanilla White Prusament but it is more of an off-white than a true white.

I'm transitioning from a Makerbot to Prusa and the Makerbot filament is a bit runny when it reaches temperature and I've been having hit or miss results with print quality.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi  Philip,

print a temperature tower to find the best print temperature for your existing filament...

Prusament Vanilla white, is intended to be off white....

whites are difficult to select, some are translucent, few are opaque

translucent white may  not look totally white when printed especially in multi colour prints

regards Joan.

RE: Recommended Filaments

Most PLA filaments from the well-known manufacturers are decent these days. I've had good luck with everything from $15 for 1Kg of Inland to $40 for 700g of the fancier stuff. Here are some others I've used with good success:

  • RePLAy 3D produces recycled ABS and PLA filament. Shipping is roughly $5, but includes return shipping for scraps you ship back. I’ve had great results with their PLA.
  • FilaStruder sells a variety of filaments, including their Veracity re-labeled KVP series, available in spool-less MasterSpool packaging. US shipping is free for orders over $100.
  • MatterHackers has a wide variety of filaments and 3D printing supplies. They offer free shipping that is as good as Amazon Prime.
  • PrintedSolid offers free 3-6 day shipping and a wide variety of filaments and 3D printing supplies.
  • Atomic Filament manufactures filament in-house, including 3.5Kg spools and very nice carbon-fibre. They offer free shipping via priority mail in the US.
  • FilamentOne manufactures filament in-house, and offers free shipping in the US.
  • 3DXTech offers some high-tech materials, including a very nice matte PETG that matches Prusa’s orange.
  • Partsbuilt 3D is a small 3D shop that offers some interesting products and filaments. Shipping is not free, but service is fantastic. They’re happy to acommodate odd requests.
  • Mad Maker Filament is a quirky manufacturer that produces PLAs in some interesting earth tones. Shipping is not free, but 1.5Kg spools are priced competitively with smaller spools from other sources.
  • Paramount 3D produces some unique military and sci-fi themed colors that are well suited to printing miniatures. Also available on Amazon Prime.
  • Gizmo Dorks produces a variety of 3D printing supplies and filaments. Available on Amazon Prime.

Wish I could get some of those Paramount 3D colours in the UK as I want so many of them lol.  Love their military range.  Unfortunately looks like its not shipped over here.

RE: Recommended Filaments

I've used so many no-name brands its impossible to list them all.  I just buy what I need and no longer really care who's name is on the box.  In many cases, when I get the box, the filament spool is very similar to Paramount (who by the way use real color identifiers so you can match colors - none of this coffee brown that is later sold as teak brown or chocolate).  It seems to me there are only a few major Chinese suppliers who wholesale to dozens of lessor companies who the resell on Amazon or wherever.

But keep in mind color has an effect on how a filament prints.  Brown Paramount prints differently than beige Paramount.  Close enough you can use the same profile settings, but there will be differences a critical eye will want to adjust for.

Thank you all for the suggestions.  I work at an architecture firm so 90% of the printing we're doing is either White or Light Grey building models.  As much as I'd love to play with all of the fun colors available on the market, there's just no desire for it other than my own.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@neophyl

I do like their colors and I'm trying to standardize on their filament for PETG and PLA.  Spools I've bought so far are PLA Army green, PETG Army Green, White PETG, Decepticon purple and Autobot blue.

I was disappointed that the army green was so different between pla and petg though(PLA left, PETG right):
