Prints great at optimal (1.5) but terrible at detail (1.0)

Printing some small models and trying to get the details to come out a little finer. So, I switched PrusaControl to the detail setting and the print keeps turning to garbage about halfway through (seems to happen at about the same layer area each time).

At first I thought I had a partial clog that was causing it to fail when trying to retract. Cleaned everything up and did a cold pull for good measure, but got the same result.

Went back to try printing it at the optimal setting again and it printed with no problem.

SO, is everyone's best guess that there is something inherent in the model design that won't let it work, or is this an indicator of something wrong with my machine?

Thanks so much for the help.

Must be tides in Antarctica ...

Post a photo - it'll at least get us closer to understanding the problem.

Here's a picture. On the left (I've begun sanding it) is the successful print at 1.5. On the right, the final result after printing at 1.0 (support not removed).

I assume you aren't using variable layers, and that you are using Slic3r.

The yellow highlighted area looks like where the issue began; like the part broke free of the bed and started lifting. I don't think it's a layer height problem, directly. But what more layers does do is allow "bad things" to happen more. If you are using grid infill, and the part lifts, the head will hammer as it crosses the perpendicular infill. 0.1 allows 50% more "hits" this way, and a marginal adhesion can become fully loose. Rectilinear infill can help those cases.

Did you happen to see the part coming loose?

But really, I don't see why you are using supports for that part. I'd use "detect bridge" (or not) and let the printer fly. At an inch or so in length, none of the overhangs should cause any serious printing problems.

I'm using PrusaControl. The part most definitely was not coming up off the bed. Also, ran the print 5 times and had the problem on what appears to be the same layers each time, which is what led me to wonder if it was somehow an issue with the part's design itself.

I will try to run it with the support turned off and see what I get. Thank you for your help.

What is the filament you're using? Looks a bit "chunky".

It's Prusament. I think the color was called Vanilla White, or something like that.

The part doesn't look that difficult. ... post an STL ...

ps: What has me curious is the part has signs it lifted; if it was still firmly attached to the bed, I have heard a tale of parts lifting off of supports, but this part looks way too small for any shrinkage issue. I'd like to look at the slice - even try printing it.

prusa control is a bit old, try Slic3r

the new alpha Slic3r has three modes sort of,

Basic - like prusa control,( relatively few controls)
Intermediate - for more advanced print management (more controls) and
Expert, - for people who can't help themselves fiddling.. 😀
