Printing layer heights

I am trying printing placards - 1mm height with 0.5mm raised letters and when using PrusaControl to set the colour change always end up with odd heights to set the colour change - and have just realised why?

If my layers are 0.2 for the first layer and 0.15 for subsequent layers, this means I guess that the height (Z axis) is dictated by this? and the 0.5mm high letters are actually 0.45 (0.15+0.15+0.15), and must start at multiples of 0.15 + the initial 0.2? (ie a 1mm base plate is actually 0.95 ... (0.15 * 5) + 0.2

If I printed a Z height of 0.6 mm I would get either 0.5 or 6.5? Is this correct?

Re: Printing layer heights

Hi Chris,
is this what happens? at 0.15mm layer height your model ends up 1.55 mm thich

you could change the layer height to 0.1mm then your background will be 0.2 +(8x0.1) = 1mm Plus
Text at 5x0.1mm = 0.5mm your model ends up 1.5mm thick
5 layers should give a good colour change to the previous colour.

or you could use 0.2mm layer height where the slicer would use 5layers for the background and 3 layers for the text, your model ends up 1.6mm thick

I try to make safe suggestions,You should understand the context and ensure you are happy that they are safe before attempting to apply my suggestions, what you do, is YOUR responsibility. Location Halifax UK

Re: Printing layer heights

Thanks very much - so my logic was good, never really occurs to me when I am
doing the 3D model to think about layer heights - but as you say I guess I could
always adjust the layer height to the model...

I do find it interesting that you have a 0.4mm nozzle but can generate a 0.1 mm layer,
guess this is down to the extrusion rate and movement of the nozzle, it's all a bit too clever
for my poor old brain...
