Massive buzzing from extruder idler and crunch during retraction

I finished my mk 2.5 upgrade and am fairly pleased, however i have one serious issue: a MASSIVE buzzing noise coming from the idler gear most of the time during extrusion and hard crunch any time it retracts. I took the door off and swung the idler out and all noises stopped, but it also stopped extruding. The gear was able to travel along its axis, so i put in some thin washers. no help. Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Massive buzzing from extruder idler and crunch during retraction

I had quite a bit of extruder noise right after I upgraded as well. I found that I had substantially over-tightened the tension of the extruder idler.

Try adjusting the tension. I've found that with filament removed, if I adjust the screws so they just barely touch the springs, then feed filament, the noises went away and everything worked fine. The instructions in the manual say that the screws should be roughly flush with the extruder, I found that this was much too tight.

Tom,
Thanks for the reply. I read that on the forums and 100% tried it first. No joy. I had the screws just barely biting into the nuts and there was still a bunch of noise.

I read elsewhere that some folks have had luck disabling "linear advance" on the extruder? Apparently this was something introduced in firmware a few generations back that I never updated to.

Does anyone know where this setting is so I can play with it? I am pretty sure the issue is the idler gear, but it wont hurt to try something else.
