Will the XL hold 5kg spools?

I have my XL shipping.  I have a very large project to print for my son.  It's a prototype flange for a motor on a boat.  The print will fit just inside the full envelope of the XL and requires 2.6kg of filament.  I've not received my XL yet but I was curious if the spool mounts on the side will hold a 5kg spool, which looking at pictures, look to be about twice the thickness at least of a 1kg spool.  I can probably mount it off the printer entirely if necessary but I was just curious if the XL will hold it without additional hardware.

Best Answer by René:

I don't think the XL spool holder is suitable for the 5KG spools.

First, will probably break off due to the excessive weight.

Secondly, a 5KG spool will not fit because the inner diameter with this kind

of spools is usually 1.25 inch.

For the 5KG spool you can better use this kind of spool holders.

The stock XL filament holder is telescoping.  While I haven’t had any 5kg spools to try on mine, I’m pretty sure that when it’s extended, it’ll hold a 6” wide spool.

I just got mine and had a 3 kg spool and it hods it with ease so I would not be surprised if 5 would work well too.

Got it.  Yea I wondered more about the weight than the size.  I've been printing for years with the 1kg spools on my MK3S and never gave it a second thought.  Just got 2 5Kg spools from California Filament and my first thought was OMG I'm screwed no cantilevered rod short of steel is never going to hold this right.  Found this on Thingiverse and it should work fine.

Thanks for the feedback.  Back to assembling my new XL.  I'll use a small spool to print the holder as my first print!

RE: Will the XL hold 5kg spools?

After a 20kg 3d printed project, which I printed with sunlu + prusament I have decided to start looking into the 5kg spools.

Using sunlu worked very well, for a 30% of the cost. But I also used prusament for color matching of ready printed parts, however, I used multi-material to minimize prusament usage.

There are several things I dont like:

- The holder on the side seems "edgy", it may hold the weight, but in the long run, I think it will break.

- The new 5kg spool seems heavy for the nextruder to pull.

Probably it would be best to redesign the side spool holder, or use another holder, that also included bearings.

Has anybody looked into this also?

As for prusament, the XL needs bigger spools to realize its potential. 5kg seems like the way to do, we also need other economics for the XL.

I am on my second 5kg spool. It does not fit over the end of the standard spool holder, but I found if you pop it back into the two parts I was able to slide the 5kg spool onto the leg attached to the printer and then reattach the outer part.

That said, after this spool I probably will use another solution. For me there is not a significant cost savings in the 5kg spool.

Which 5kg brand are you using?
