Torq screws for XL?

I just had the most spectacular blob of death on my XL today (sure, always perfect first layer...) In the process of fixing it I almost lost one of the M3x12bT screws, so I thought I should buy a few spare ones.  Can someone advise me what to look for on Amazon (US)? Can't find anything called M3x12bT. There are a few sets of torx screws but I'd rather not discover they don't fit. But then again, I guess it's Amazon, so I could just send them back...

RE: Torq screws for XL?

I'd say that they are countersunk Torx screws with M3 thread and 12mm length.

Can you post a photo, ideally in assembly location as well as head diameter, head height and key size? Then I can see if they are in my fairly recent book of machine elements. I can do so on monday when i will be in the office.

Might cylinder head screws a feasible alternative if they are not yet of such type?

RE:

Are these the torx screws ?. This is the ref. ISO 14581.

Prusa should specify the screw types by the ISO or DIN reference. It would be far easier to f1nd them.

BTW : it’s not a good symptom that an experienced and skilled user like you can have huge blobs of death with the XL. Not surprising that many people has issues with the printer.

Are you sure they aren't labeled M3x12rT?  That's what mine are labeled and McMaster-Carr seems to carry them.  The SS ones are here:

From https://help.prusa3d.com/guide/how-to-replace-a-nextruder-xl_463037 step 7, 8, 13, 14, and 15:

With a TX10 screwdriver remove the bottom M3x12bT screws from the X-carriage.

I looked through some other knowledgebase articles for the XL. In one they're referring to M3x12rT screws, in another one there is mention of M3x8bT screws, as well as M3x8rT screws...

Just remembered, that there is a cheat sheet with all the XL's screw/bolt sizes that also shows the size profile of them... 🙂

Thanks for all your input! My initial question though was not what those screws were called or were they were located, but what to order on Amazon as Amazon doesn't have anything labeled M3-12bT, as Prusa calls them. Assuming that the "b" just stands for "recessed" (because, why not 🙃), I ordered a set of recessed M3 torx screws, will let you know if they fit.

I only mentioned the designation to verify that we were talking about the same part.  IAC, the McMaster-Carr part linked in my reply above appears to be identical to the subject screws.

Update: I ordered a set of M3,M4, and M5 torx screws on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09LYRL63N. Went back the same day they arrived. They fit but the star slots for the M3 were way too shallow so the torx drivers slipped right away. I ended up ordering the uxcell M3x12 as suggested by @mme. I have many uxcell screw kits and found them to be top notch, but still I'd prefer a kit of different sizes than just the one.

Maybe the M3 screws were tamperproof torx (there's a small pin in the star slot)? Looks like that the item in your Amazon link doesn't exist anymore, so can't check product info.

@MME I was refering to fuchsr's link to the screw set, that he said that the torx drivers didn't fit the slot on the M3 screws

Forum software included period at the end of the sentence in the URL ☹️ Try https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09LYRL63N

RE: Torq screws for XL?

Yeah, those are tamperproof torx, the driver needs to have a hole in the middle for it to work. The Torx keys that came with the XL should work though.

Yes the torx wrenches Prusa did supply do have the hole in the center. I just checked them. 👍

FWIW, the Torx driver that came with my XL a few days ago does have the center hole.  Maybe it's the luck of the draw.

I checked the Allen wrenches that came with the XL, and yes they have the hole. But the screws they use don't have the temper-proof mechanism and work fine with the driver set I bought, so it never occurred to me that such a thing might even exist ☹️
