When the Prusa XL is delayed, consider interim solutions.

I apologise; this is a niche Prusa post. However, despite the fact that I adore my three MK3 printers, I already have enough designs that call for a sizable build area and enough prints that a fourth printer would be helpful. According to the most recent Prusa post, the first run of XLs should arrive in December.

That is so far away that I wonder if I need a stop-gap. If I find I need to make a lot of large prints and find I can get reasonable quality from the Voron, I might build a Voron to use while I wait for the XL and then either sell that or just keep both.

I don't know if there's a question in this, or it's just some externalized musing 🤔.

No one knows for sure when the XL will ship, so sure, if you need to print anything large in the meantime, you may want to consider a larger printer 🙂

I broke down and got a CR-10S Pro V2. It's wasn't expensive and after a few mods like Wham Bam it prints pretty nice, although a little slow. It will be for sale if the XL ever ships.

RE: When the Prusa XL is delayed, consider interim solutions.

I'm interested as well in this topic, i'm in the market for a larger printer and i'm coming from an original prusa with which I printed nearly everything with every material. I considered:

Zortrax m300 but lot of people says that is not as good as the sister m200

Raise 3d, but lot of people says of inexistent support bad quality of printing although nice features

Ultimaker s5 some kind of workhorse but with average quality and lot of prints wasted

So the general thoughts are that:

Till 50k printer you get the same quality of the mk3, it seems that to have the reliability features in a format larger than 200mm3 you to spend more than 3-5k and take a rip off is easy and risky.

Do you any suggestions? 200euro for the xl is no big deal and i love prusa environment but i wish to print next year can't accept the risk to wait 2024

I think the new snapmaker artisan could be the best option.

I've seen a lot of people decide the writing it on the wall as far as long delays for the XL goes and are switching to the Bambu Lab X1. Build size might not be as big , but has lots of other benefits and is very well priced and is shipping already.

Part of early KS backers have them already. They stated all 5k+ KS are shiped from china. Now preorders are in production. So it is real and damn fast

I built a Voron 350 2 years ago because I was thinking Prusa would take too much time to put a CoreXY printer on the market and I badly need one. At that time there was a big demand from users and some tips Prusa will make one. I don't regret my decision. Now I can wait quietly my Prusa XL preorder.

I can print 3kg of parts plates at once.

I never considered buying a Chinese printer.

RE:

@rony1999 I know it's an old topic, but the question is still valid and should give you some thoughts before buying this printer. Not only for the delay bust even for the first 1-2 years after the first batch is delivered.

For me all the "guessing" about quality, delivery, and my personal experience with the PrusaMini (and how Prusa doesn't handle the main problems on the mini), I decided to go for Voron printers. With Voron's you have enough printing space (depending on the model), the project is well documented and so many builds that were successfully. And with klipper you have all the possibility to adjust your printer if you want something different, the community will help you. There is no company behind that needs good reviews or that will just keep up with a model that has problems.

On the XL on the other hand, you buy something that you don't know anything about and in my opinion is highly hyped. I mean: There is no real data or experience available but still people are waiting to get the first batch. Do you really think you will get all the information from the first batch if there are general problems? Look at the PrusaMini. How many users have / had the same problems, how many open issues are not handled (just check github) from HW to firmware. But still all the "big reviewers" write how good the mini is or show videos about their prints. But nobody mentions the problems starting after 3-6 months or the general design that is unstable or unaligned (z-axis/x-axis). Only if you dig in the forums or search for smaller reviewers (that don't depend on funds from companies, because it's a hobby). And this is exactly what worries me about the XL - to have the same experience as with the PrusaMini.

In 2-3 years, I can check if the XL is a real option. If you aren't in a hurry I would just wait and see how the first year after release goes - this as the first interim solution and maybe even on a longer term view
