Waiting for Prusa "XL" or getting a Voron 2.4 kit?

Hello,

I would like to have a bigger printer thats not bed slinger style. After CTC Bizer (quite ok in 2015), MK2.5S (2017 - still running quite good), Ender 3 Pro with Klipper (2019 - not so bad) and a Sapphire Plus (2020 - don´t like it even after some upgrades), FLSUN Q5 (2020 - bad print quality),  I want to do the next step.

Would YOU wait for the "phantom" Prusa XL? With a delivery time months after ordering and payment?

Or get a Voron 2.4 kit (300 x 300 x 300) and build it slowly in some weeks?

Please share your opinion.

 Best regards, Peter

Prusa XL.  I prefer the support and tested software behind it.

Thanks for your comment. The community around/behind Voron and Klipper is not that small. I am using Klipper on my Ender 3 and FLSUN Q5, so basic knowledge is there.

What I really don´t like is paying months in advance (1.000+ €?) before getting the merchandise. It is a little bit like at Kickstarter projects.

The Prusa XL does not exist. Announced without any estimated date. Are you ready to wait a full year or more to have it with normal delivery times?

@doctorrudd

Then Prusa's initial offering is not for you.  The XL will come and it will be different from the Voron.  It will have a tool changer.  I can wait for a more reliable and more capable printer.  I trust that Prusa will deliver.

Cant wait to see the XL.

I have a feeling there will be something announced around black friday, whether its just an upgrade for the MK3/MINI, new MMU or maybe the XL release date.

Tank you very much!

I just got the MK3s+ and Im ready to buy a larger format printer with enclosure.

If Prusa makes it I will buy it. Anything for $3000 or under and I will buy it.

I have been following the Voron 2.4.  Seems parts take from 1-3 months to show up and many seem to take 4-6 months from first order to build their printers.  Not recommended for beginners by Voron users.

However, it does seem well done!

Disclosure: I do not have a 3D printer.  I am an engineer, but Voron seems a challenge because it involves Structures, Dynamics, Electronics, Material Science and hands on building skills.  Not insurmountable but a relatively complex undertaking!

Did you mean Rat Rig? Google's not finding anything called War Rig.

For testing purpose I got Sidewinder X1 (300x300x400). To be able printing some bigger parts in PLA, it's perfectly fine out of the box. It fills my need for casual big prints.

The thing with bigger printers is that you need a different concept if you want to print something else then PLA. PETG, ASA, ABS will warp at the bigger size, so it need to be enclosed. You also want to print as fast as possible or otherwise you have to wait a week for a single 300x300x300 print. To meet this requirements you have to take trade-offs.

Looking forward to see what Prusa XL will offer and at which price point. I think it's essential that it can print reliable and with good quality at higher speed. Will be interesting to see if they want to target a consumer market ($1000-$1500) or manufactures (> $2000).

That is an interesting design!  Rat Rigs show promise.  I have a CR-10 Pro and Anycubic Chiron which are ok to mess with.  I can wait for a Prusa XL.

One of the things that bothers me is that jumping from 250 mm to 300 does not mean XL. So why call a 300mm cube XL? Even 210 to 300 isn't a huge jump.  The other part of the equation is speed. Printing larger demands higher performance. A 72 hour print of a scaled 200 cubed part on a 300 cubed printer - at the same speeds - becomes untenable. I've read nothing that indicated the Prusa XL will be anything substantially faster than a Mk3.   Add that now they are discussing turning the XL into a multimaterial extruder, whatever that means: if it means with a built-in MMU of their design?  RUN-AWAY! RUN-AWAY! But the fact they are still working on the extruder means they are also months if not years away from a final design - but as it's Prusa - we'll see them offer up a printer that isn't finished; and users will become the uncompensated alpha test force. Again: Mk1, Mk2, Mk3, SLA, MMU1, MMU2, and so on.

And, as others have said: Buy and pay now, and we might ship in a year! is a business policy I just can deal with (good for others who can because I'm not taking up one of those limited shipping spots that keep slipping).

If it's just a "Mk3 XL" the name might makes more sense. From what I've read, 300-400 is about as large as you can get with belt-driven designs. IMO, it's a completely new design, so from a marketing perspective, I wouldn't want to imply it's simply a bigger i3. I suspect "XL" is just the internal working name. They may call it something else completely by the time it comes out.

I purchased a 300x300x400 Artillery Sidewinder X1 last year. It may not sound much bigger, but that's 3.2X the build volume. The addition of a Volcano hotend makes using much higher throughput and fatter nozzles practical. I wouldn't try a full bed detailed print, but for a big chonky bird feeder or other functional part, print times are comparable to the detailed prints on my Mk3. I don't think the average user really needs that size, but it has been handy for the big prints. Functional prints are usually 12 hours or less in most cases. YMMV.

The bigger news is the move away from the cartesian i3 "bed slinger" design. The Sidewinder will struggle printing a dense print with all the extra weight that has to be moved on the Y axis. Ringing can be a nightmare.

[...] And, as others have said: Buy and pay now, and we might ship in a year! is a business policy I just can deal with (good for others who can because I'm not taking up one of those limited shipping spots that keep slipping).

Heh. Well, Prusa's not exactly perfect in that regard, but I think their approach of "pay for it after we're manufacturing them and you'll eventually get one" is better than the "pay for one now and then we'll design it and you should get one probably" approach of using Kickstarter and other crowdfunding platforms that Creality and their ilk are using now.

A number of Core XY machines have proven to be around twice the printing speed of bed slingers and other standard printers.

50-75mm/s turns into 150mm/s....

Extruder throughput may be a limiting factor!

@bobstro

On the Mini - is was pretty obvious they weren't manufacturing yet still collecting money and making promises they couldn't keep. I haven't followed it, but have they ever caught up?

I don't mind delays that can be quoted, or even the occasional bump - we all know things happen: but I will not pay in advance for something where the seller won't provide a confirmed ship date. One reason is that you lose all protection for fraud. 60 days and your CC carrier will laugh if you try to contest the purchase. Not that Prusa is in that class - yet - but why take the risk?

Maybe it was that time I was in Prague and watched two guys soap their arms and tried to break into my rental while my wife was sitting in the back seat... lol (wasn't very funny at the time).
