RE: Unofficial Prusa XL Waiting Thread

Just from a marketing perspective you’d think that Prusa would be getting more printers into people’s hands that will do PR work for them.  Without input shaping, isn’t this basically half the printer anyways?  It seems the speed from the input shaper is critical to make the bigger prints viable.

When have they done that in the past?  Not with the Mini.  Prusa does not divert production capacity to influencers away from paying customers.

I wouldn't say half the printer. Input shaping will be very nice, but, it's pretty decent speed already without it. Yeah, there's plenty of other, much faster, printers, so if speed is your #1 need, you'll want to look at other printers.

At this volume and on 2023 one woud expect more speed, yes... A MK* speed on a XL is killing the whole point...

This is certainly one of the more interesting takes I've seen in a long time (and this coming from someone who co-operates a semi-public makers space

I have never made a video with my Mk3, I very much doubt I will do so with my XL; if I ever do it will certainly not be before I am fully familiar with the machine, not before 5000 - 10000 hours of use and not unless I have something worthwhile to contribute.

Minor fame on Youtube for opening a box has a no value for normal people.

Prusa don't need marketing assistance or PR, the printers sell themselves.

Speed is irrelevant.  Reliability is what makes bigger prints viable; if a unique print takes a week or so to come off perfectly that is far better than 24 hours to make scrap.

I know most people are not going to create an unboxing or other video, but when the MK3 came out there was A LOT of people that said they received it and started printing and/or received the kits and started building.  This is not happening with the XL or for the MK4 where there should be more shipped than the XL....

Maybe 3d printing just is as cool and cutting edge anymore?

These printers to all the normal people aren’t really that different.  A little bigger, maybe a bit faster, multimaterial isn’t new.

I think I get what you're saying here and kind of agree, especially for hobbyists. However, I don't think higher speed should, or does, have to equate to less reliable - in fact, higher speeds while maintaining or improving reliability should be simultaneous and achievable goals. Other printers are capable of doing both; Prusa being who they are should be more than capable of doing so as well. Reliability is not an inelastic trade-off for going fast.

It seems to me though, that at the present time, you can have your choice of any two of the following:-  speed, reliability and super quality prints.

The differences may narrow with time, but it's unlikely that this will ever change as the three are opposing forces - it's why top fuel dragsters need their engines rebuilt after 500 or so revolutions (true) - the faster you go, the more you have to compromise.

For me the latter two are more important and I'm happy to trade off speed.  Others have different requirements and are happy to give away quality to win boat races (or simply to produce a lot more product in a given time).  There's nothing wrong with having a marketplace that has product with different emphasis either.

My longest print to date was 9 days on my CR-10S Pro.  Too big for my MK3S but I am sure I will have similar-sized prints on my XL.  Reliability is key at that size.

I think the Klipper or input shaping or whatever you want to call it is supposed to increase speed with out sacrificing - which is hard to quantify, but makes printers far more efficient, especially in a farm setting.

The thing I'm mostly trying to say is that reliability doesn't have to suffer for speed. At present that's a common trade off, but it can be overcome. I'd posit that it's an inevitability that speed and reliability both increase. Just because something took 9 days and turned out with some measure of "reliable" (or even "quality"), doesn't mean that same exact output can't happen in 8 days, or 4.

Speed was not even a consideration when ordering.  Build volume and true multimaterial function were (and remain) the attraction. I am certain it will print faster than I can design...

RE: Unofficial Prusa XL Waiting Thread

...yes, I'm also waiting...

...and no, this is nothing new to me...

I was one of those guys that waited a looong time for the Mk3 to be shipped, and then another loooooong time for the MMU2 - which was the reason I bought the printer in the first place: True and reliable Multi-Material printing. Unfortunately, my experiences with the MMU2 - which had the release-date postponed almost by 1,5 years... - made me think it should rather be called MCU: Multi-Colour-Unit. Once you dialed one material in, the problems with the previous one started again... And frankly I wanted the water-soluble for true measurements on technical parts. Which I never reliably achieved despite one user claiming he did what I was not able to do...

So forgive me when I smile about someone fretting about 9 months of waiting...

Print-Speed is definitely NOT on my list of preferable things. Many problems that are asked on social media can (in my opinion) simply be mittigated by reducing speed: Slicer was built with one single material in mind: PLA. Other materials behave differently in terms of viscosity and stringiness. So don't be mad at me when I say: No, thank you, no speeding for me, I (intend) to print with different materials and rather wait three days for a print that works out as intended and hoped for, instead of producing three times a spaghetti-monster each in one day.

I never asked how long it will take - it will be here when it is here. All those negative energies do nothing except getting everyone grumpy. However I understand the frustration of paying the money up-front, only to be left waiting. But then again: It's free market economy. Unattended waiting is part of a new Prusa-Product. If it doesn't suit you, feel free to choose a different product that suits your needs better...

a couple of things Prusa is known for:

  • building reliable printers, value for money
  • organising a state of the art 24/7 helpdesk
  • not keeping promises when a timeframe is given 😀 LOL

Offcourse I can be wrong, but as far as I remember, may would be the month where ordered Multi-head XL's would be shipped. One day left of may.

Yeah, Jo stated somewhere that that date has slipped 2 weeks, and they are starting with 2 head versions.  5 head versions will ship 1 month later.  I consider these minor as they are incorporating feedback.

Full disclosure: 5 head XL ordered at announcement.  Patiently waiting.

RE: Unofficial Prusa XL Waiting Thread

Sadly from what I was told on Prusa chat checking my XL updates ( I have 3 on order - 1 tool , 2-tool and a 5-tool ) ordered day 1 release I haven’t received anything yet . I was told to expect at least one of them in Roughly 2-3 months .

I received the MK4 I ordered quickly and absolutely love it . It Intergeated seamlessly into my Prusa connect farm and is running like a champ . I also have on order 6 MK4 upgrade kits ( they didn’t have any shipping estimates for me on those )
