The XL is open source? When can we get CAD files for the printer to then design enclosures etc?

As per title. Is the XL open source? If so then can we get the CAD files? I would be very helpful for a number of reasons.

Best Answer by cwbullet:

To my knowledge, and I have looked, I do not think they have released them.

I was asking the same thing, mainly around adding different heads.  Paste version definitely.  Really want a pellet fed head. And inspection attachement based on the sensor in the extruder seems to be a straighforward add.

Maybe this model or sides could help you to develop an enlosure:

https://www.printables.com/de/model/423459-prusa-xl-original-size

https://clearviewplastic.com/products/prusa-xl-3d-printer-acrylic-enclosure-kit

https://www.reddit.com/r/prusa3d/comments/114q1iv/are_you_excited_for_the_xl_here_are_the_xl/?rdt=62587

Regarding the release of current CAD data you should ask Prusa.

nice,  that enclosure with all the bells and whistles is nearly the price of the printer haha

You take a look at what I am doing. If you have questions about dimensions let me know. I have been doing my enclosure piece by piece in a certain order. As with most mass produced equipment I have found some tolerances need to be a little flexible as the dimensions vary a little throughout the printer.

Cool project. an enclosure is one thing I'd like for my XL when it arrives. It will be mostly printing PLA to start with but I want to locate it in a garage and winter isn't too far away in the UK. I'd like to maintain a steady 25-30c which I read is one of your aims.

Yeah, this was stated a while ago that this would be open source after delivery began. This was 4 months ago..

With my ASA printing the past few days I have been maintaining 47C. The ASA print I am running now is part of the enclosure. It is a 10hr 45min print. It has been maintaining that 47C 14 percent humidity all day.even though the enclosure is printed in PLA with T2020 extrusion panels the enclosure is doing great.

I have been preheating everything for about a hour before I start the prints in ASA.

With the arrival of my XL being imminent(like in transit), I suppose I better get an enclosure figured out!  lol  I also need to get something to put it on.  Work sure gets in the way lol

Sounds ideal. The most I've gotten with my enclosed printers is about 50c so I'd be very happy with that.

Speaking of open source, what I really want is the specs for the print heads so we can see what we can make.  A paste extruder seems to be a good first step.  A pellet in place of filament would be a game changed at this scale, even if just for infill.  Getting E3D to make some more nozzles would be good too.

Bringing back this thread..

Have any 3d models or assemblies been made available for the Prusa XL?

RE: The XL is open source? When can we get CAD files for the printer to then design enclosures etc?

Not that I've seen, outside of the printable parts.

It'd sure help to have the full assembly like we've had on the I3's for modding purposes, particularly in STEP format as doing any meaningful takeoffs from STL's is a huge PITA.

It took a few hours and several test prints just to get a usable takeoff on the location of the 4 bolt holes for the back vented panel in relationship to the rest of the frame to use as a mount point for stabilizing Voxel's enclosure.   (I'll be posting those before too long once I get a minute to get to it).

But yeah, my vote is PLEASE, release the step files for this stuff.   It'd save an immense amount of time burned trying to devise stuff.

I CAD'd a nozzle lock thing that would accommodate having a sock on to allow for nozzle changes without having to totally de-mount the entire nozzle assembly.  While there was a similar one out there, it didn't handle the sock (which my 5TH has on all extruders), and without a STEP file of the original to work from I more or less had to recreate it from scratch via rather tricky measurements via calipers and mics, and it'd have been infinitely easier to do if I just had a decent STEP file of the whole thing to work from.

There's not much out there CAD wise on the XL, and what little there is was all based on pre production "guesses" as to the actual final design, and most of what is out there are some variant of pretty useless mesh formats (STL / 3MF / etc).

I've never worked with any flavor of mesh modeler in 20+ years of doing CAD, so I have no notion of how to even approach doing that sort of thing.  Everything I've used is some variant of a NURBS package over the years (Solidworks / ProE / various ACIS based platforms / Rhino / Etc.).   That to me is CAD, and all this polygonal stuff is more suited to gaming and CGI stuff where there is no requirement for absolute positioning.

You'd never see a parts subcontractor in say, the automotive sector, using a derivitive  polygonal mesh as their basis for creating a part that had to interface with anything else in the universe, and there's a real good reason for that.

So Prusa, FFS, please release this stuff and do it in STEP so we can actually use it.

TIA.

I agree 100%. I just want to create some things for this printer and also give back to the community that has treated me so well over the years.

I'm a little perplexed how Prusa is complaining about Bambu thieving a bunch of open source innovations but also treating the XL as effectively closed source by not open sourcing anything for it. There's not even a GitHub for the XL.

What gives @Prusa? I'd like to understand what the stance is on this. I bought an XL at much more money than the competitors so that I could DIY on this platform.

I totally understand concerns with the design being ripped off by *cough* certain other manufacturers. At this point, I'd be perfectly happy to see a limited release of STEP files of the frame assembly, with the rest to follow over time.
My priorities that reduce immediate reverse-engineering would be centered around enclosures and filament management: overall frame->filament path components->tool heads->motors/mechanical/electronics.

Do you have a cad model of the XL? I'm still waiting for mine but I'm designing a manifold for all of the filament entries add in going to bypass the side filament sensor since I'll be feeding the filament from my Drybox.

I'm needing to figure out some dimensions for mounting it to the rear and could really use a model.

Thanks in advance.

No I don't have a cad model of the XL. I measured mine as I made the parts.

@Prusa what is the status of the CAD files for the actual printer?

I also would like STEP files, because my XL is seriously out of whack on the top belt, and I cannot get it tensioned properly.
