RE: Prusa Delays

Bottom line is if you don't need multihead, there is no reason to pay premium/wait for the XL

I agree that if you need only a single extruder printer with large build volume and you are impatient,
you can consider other printers but you will miss important technology features.

Personally I think XL with 2 heads  is the best value to start with (i print only mechanical functional parts, no multicolor or busts )

  • Print with different nozzle sizes in the same part
  • Print with different support material
  • Print with 2 colors from 2 separate extruders without filament changes (front panels with text or symbols)
  • The load cell in the extruder will observe the print process 100 % of the print time. No other extruder can do this.
AI-camera surveillance in other printers does not work reliably...

RE: Prusa Delays

That is not necessarily true.  You are missing some other features that the XL will have:

  1. A large bed with the flex sheet
  2. Innovative leveling system
  3. Multi-segment heatbed
  4. Nextruder
  5. Rigid CoreXL
  6. Wickedly good support network.

This.

However, they had the E3D toolchanger around long enough for testing. Probably software development started way earlier than hardware, to lay the groundwork. Any kinks at launch will most likely be in software, which is open source. There is actually not so much fiddling involved in toolchanging (basically offset calibration and reproducible tool handover), so I don't think MMU is a good comparison. Any filament or nozzle profile that works in single-head mode will work the same in multi-head. So I remain very optimistic. Bottom line is if you don't need multihead, there is no reason to pay premium/wait for the XL.

A large bed with the flex sheet

Still happy that we don't go back to the glass plate

Innovative leveling system

All system moders no longer need any calibration. The method doesn't matter, only the result counts.

Multi-segment heatbed

I'm waiting to see if this won't cause more problems like height differences or non-planarity because of the flexible sheet.

Nextruder

Are you talking about the thing they changed after the announcement? Apart from a pretty name, what's really next generation?

Rigid CoreXL

The upside down world is a core XL which I find will be the least rigid by definition as it has removed the vertical uprights in front and the horizontal uprights in front as well. It is surely because of this that the speed will not be fast.

Wickedly good support network.

Support is the strength of prusa with the development of the slicer and the rest. But that's not everything either.

RE: Prusa Delays

- Large bed with flex sheet was new 5 years ago.
- Don't care about innovative levelling system, what matters is if it works (I have had a large printer with BLtouch for years and never had any issues)
- multi-segment heatbed: nice to have, but more complexity/points of failure, heavy & needs custom firmware. Also probably relatively expensive for what it delivers. They need to be careful, or chinese 1:1 clones will appear, only lacking this feature & at massively lower price.
- Nextruder: I'm so hoping this will be awesome. But not holding my breath after Mk3s extruder and it's various iterations. I don't really see the point in this, when there are so many excellent lightweight direct extruders around that work reliably and are cheap to make. Load cell is cool and might be a killer feature, but we've not seen it in action and I don't think it needed a completely new extruder design. Daughter board + single wire is super nice, but you'll want that anyway for tool-changing.
- Rigid Core XL. Haha. There are so many other cheaper coreXY designs, and not really another option for quality large area printers. Hardly innovative and it doesn't look too rigid to me. Innovative was something like the kinematic beds (e.g. Ratrig Vcore) or René Juracks DICE.
- Support network: Yes. But my personal experience trying to get spare parts for Mk2/s/2.5s/3/MMU1/2/2s was not so stellar (ended up getting a lot of stuff from China). This could be even worse now, when they actually need the parts to crank out printers. And with MMU sometimes I felt like customer support just gave up.

Seriously, the real innovation is all related to the toolchanger. Overall it's a very nice package if they can deliver on most of their promises. I also still think it's fairly priced, but most of the "innovative" features are either de facto standard, or nobody else has them because they target a very small segment of users. The rest is marketing speech, imho.

Not if you want to support a company that steps others IP, as they were caught with other peoples work on their file repository.

Is this something to go with it?

It makes the Prusa control look old.

...Something else on the horizon of competition from the Chinese powerhouse Creality. More details to be announced in April.

I wouldn't expect to see this with a toolchanger but knowing their previous machines it could have a similar build volume to an XL.

Their angle is aimed at speed printing so it'll be directly competing with the BBL printers.

I'm a day 3 pre-order, for a multi-tool. It sounds like maybe a Christmas gift for myself? Hopefully over the next ~4-6 weeks we can get clarity on that... if it's that far out, I'm just going to get another X1C instead.

"The semi-assembled version will start shipping in May 2023. The process of manufacturing a semi-assembled printer is different and requires a new set of testing machines – these could not be built until after we wrapped up the hardware on the final XL. We expect to have the testing machines ready by the end of April."

Maybe read first 😉

RE:

I'm very happy to hear there's some movement on the XL.

So I ordered a single head within about an hour of the first day. To change my order to a multi head , Where do you fit into the queue after that? Do you fall in line behind all the other multi head orders? Or do you still keep your time stamp from when you ordered and just fall in the queue that way regardless whether you ordered a single or a multi head to begin with?

An alternatively if someone had a multi head order in the first hour of day one and wanted to switch to a single tool head how would that work? It's not my situation but I'm curious.

I think I could expect a October ish delivery date?

RE: Prusa Delays

Quite a lot of disappointment from the update, and I think it opens up other areas for speculation.
Mainly
- that the cover/shroud isn't included or wont be ready to purchase at the time of checkout (or maybe it will be if it takes several months just for the day1 orders ;( )
- still zero information on the performance of the printer
- those that splashed for the assembled kit get them first? -but doesn't that take more time from Prusa employees to assemble to get out the door. In my mind it kinda goes against what it was to buy a Prusa, you build it, you learn it, you love it. The second thing about that, as they won't be sending the semi-ass kits for a few months due to testing equipment needed, because of? "until after we wrapped up the hardware on the final XL" Wait?! how long have you not know about the final hardware? But you say you've been waiting on hardware to come from suppliers for the long delays...
I think this journey may have tainted my enjoyment of this printer before it ever arrives.

The way I interpreted the shipping bits is that they're basically working the full list based on date/time of preorder. Based on that order, if you want a single extruder, you can complete your order and get your unit. If you want a multi-extruder, you do nothing and wait for those machines to be available in some months. In the meantime, while you're waiting, single extruder machines are continually built and shipped.
Once multi-extruder machines are available to ship, you confirm your order, and I ASSume those orders are processed in the same date/time of preorder.

So, in a way, single extruder pre-orders get to skip ahead a bit, mostly due to the fact that the multi-extruder is not ready, but the single is.

To me, if my understanding above it correct, that seems a fair way to go about it.

I think this is my only thing I wish they had updated about. If I were staring at my email to order today (I'm not, fwiw), I would be wary of buying simply because I don't have enough information to make a purchase with confidence. I know Prusa keeps harping that they aren't in it for speed, but, they have to have an idea of what kind of speed it DOES work at, and many folks would want to know that ahead of spending many hundreds of dollars.

The shroud has been an add on from the start.

RE: Prusa Delays

Did you guys read the blog? So many complaining about the fact that Prusa has not said anything about speed. Prusa is releasing Prusa Slicer 2.5.1 very soon and it will contain updated profiles for the XL. You’ll be able to slice everything and see the recommended print speed. And I guess the profiles will keep on being improved in the future.

Very soon isn't now, when orders are starting. I don't even use PrusaSlicer right now either, so that isn't helpful for me (or anyone at the company I consult with). Is it so much to ask to have clear guidance from the manufacturer?
