Multi-color switching question

So I guess this isn’t XL specific, but applies. When switching extruders  in this case it appears that there isn’t a purge-block? But how does one prevent the drool on the first touchdown. Certainly seen it happen many times on my 3s and mini, where after a filament change it touches some random point on the model and the small colored zit is left (with PLA at least the head plows right on through, but if that was CF-PC that would likely crash). Also is there going to be some sort of wiper since the nozzles are just sitting there melting away and with multiple extruders I am going to be way more tempted to do multi-material prints (on my old E3D BigBox dual the nozzles parked behind a silicone wiper blade which knocked the drool off into a cup. I also assume you can tell prusaslicer that you do or don’t want to keep a parked nozzle hot/cold? Clearly if you have PVA in a nozzle you don’t want it to bake for hours, whereas with nylon/PC I’m far less cautious)

RE: Multi-color switching question

Looking at the videos and such so far, it doesn't really look like the additional extruders will be "preheat"able. My guess is when they're picked up, they start a heating process, so there will be a small delay before it begins printing again.
I had also wondered about cleaning up any strings that remain and had hoped some solution to that would present itself before release.

I'm not sure what their plan is, but it could be easily remedied with a sacrificial object. Like a purge tower, but instead a priming tower.

RE:

I would have thought a purge bucket and a brush or similar wiping system was more suitable...

RE: Multi-color switching question

How do the Core XL (?) printers deal with it?

The simplist way would be to raise the print head a bit, put it over the infil part of the model and cool it there.  Then move it to the dock.  Pick up the next coolhead, take it over the infill and start to heat it up and kind of 'wipe' to infil.  The model would have to have infill.

Or a 'wipe station.

THe dockign station could have a self centering plug/rest for the nozzle to keep it from oozing.

That's why I'd like to see the PrusaSlicer version as soon as possible.

I think a bit more aggressive retraction of material when the tool is put back could prevent a lot of oozing, without completely cooling down the head.

Why wouldn't they be pre-heatable? Every extruder/tool has it's own connection and power, from what I can see in the video.

This has been discussed and experimented with with the E3D Toolchanger. Some people have brushes etc, some have a purge tower. It can be a lot smaller than the normal one though.

However small, it makes a mockery of the 36x36x36 print volume if they need a tower to make use of the multiple tools, so I hope that isn't the answer.
