RE: Any info on the Prusa XL?

Well that ticks most of my boxes.  However I think I shall wait until the initial rush is over and get one next year after the initial wave has gone out and we get some actual user feedback.

RE: Any info on the Prusa XL?

While the box looks and the text reads really nice, the price is somewhat prohibitive, starting at 2.100€ for a semi-assembled, single-head machine. 500€ for Prusa assembly hints at the build being a bit more complex than an i3 kit (which is expected, though). This is clearly aiming at professional territory. Not to mention planned delivery for Q2/Q3 2022 earliest.

So unless an Mk4 is revealed really soon (i.e. in time for Black Friday 2021 and available not only in late 2022) with at least 32bit and perhaps a slightly bigger build volume, I think I'll get another brand to complement my Mini before 2022 has started. CoreXY and even linear rails are available for less than half of what Prusa asks - even when taking the necessary adjustments of most other printers into consideration. Sure - the concept with the tool changer sounds tempting, but it's also a bit of overkill for private use (except for the hardcore enthusiasts, maybe).

I may revisit the tool changer and other ideas of the XL in - say - 2 years from now, but I need a bigger printer than the Mini to tide me over until then. And I can't justify spending a grand for a smallish 8-bit printer aka Mk3S+ in late 2021. Sorry Prusa! I'll step back and free my place in the XL waiting queue for someone else - you're welcome 🙂

Interested to know what FW it is running.

Will it be open source?

Hopefully a lot of the tech filters down to the Mk4 which has to be on its coat tails.  The more they sell of common parts the better for Prusa.

I'm skeptical there. Unless Prusa surprises us with the Mk4 being an XL "lite" with smaller print bed and without tool changer, there'd probably be little common tech, except maybe for the display and some bolts and nuts.

From the blog post "Just an upfront note: we are aiming for print quality, not looking to join the SpeedBoatRace."  but it also goes on to say an unsupported but official version of klipper should be available for those wanting to push speeds.

RE:

Price is a bit steep, but this is not the same class of machine. helps demos when you are also a filament manufacturer and can blow through 10kg of prusament for a model factory. It’s like when I visited formlabs they have a notre dame print that’s like $1000 worth of resin printed on the 3L. But with my gmax being irrevocably busted (it’s like a 1970s jaguar, once you fix/replace one part another breaks). But heat creep detection would be amazing so I don’t have to hillbilly armor my prusa print head with heat sinks anymore. The self deploying enclosure is really clever (I assume they have a real mount for the camera given the bellows are black)

The control board, the extruder, the modular heat bed, the screen all could translate to a bed slinger I would think.  I'd prefer a small CoreXY but that may detract from the XL

Given that the print farm printer shown at the earlier show (the one designed to rack together) used a 3x3 grid of the heated beds without anyone noticing already then yes a 27x27 bed is not only possible but already exists.

The smaller the Core XY printer, the less room for heads.  I’d still like the option- if not for anyhthing else than parts commonality between the XL and Mk3.  Head switching- for nozzle size or just maintenance is a big deal for me.  BUT it looks like it is 24V, so you’d have to trash the current electronics/power source of the Mk3, and then add the new heads.  Sound like I might just donate the Mk3 to my kids school and buy a Mk4 straight up- though $3500 for the XL will take awhile to digest.  I don’t see a Mk4 until early 2023.

-The mini is the last pre-order that we had, but literally at almost 1/10 the cost.  It will be interesting to see how long this line will be.

-I’ve just gotten my z-adjust skills TIGHT, and now it will be auto..

-Looking for 300C+ options on the print heads.

To me it would fit the portfolio: Mini as entry solution, Mk3 updated with 32 bit, but a tad lower price point as mainstream/consumer offer and the Mk4 filling the gap to the professional offer XL.

Mk4 then being faster and with a bigger bed than Mk3 and as CoreXY, to justify the slightly higher price point in its „prosumer“/enthusiast position.

Would make total sense to me! If they’re worried about too many SKU‘s and the logistic implications, they could even axe the Mk3, without destroying the portfolio structure.

Hopefully the Mk4 announcement follows suit now …

Just to point out that the MK3 is already a 24v printer.  So no trashing of  anything.

BUT it looks like it is 24V, so you’d have to trash the current electronics/power source of the Mk3,

RE:

RAEW, You might consider the Vivedino Troodon 400 x 400 x 500 build size. I've had one for about a year and just recently upgraded to all metal hot end and direct drive extruder. I still have some tweaking to do but it is a solid build and very capable. Also, there is now a Troodon profile for the PrusaSlicer (with or without the DD extruder). Formbot3D (the supplier), has been very responsive with replies to email the next day in almost all cases. FYI, I have no connection with the company. Cheers

Thx for the info, Derek! I’ll sit back and see what options BF brings next week. Still hoping I could get away in the low 4-digit area (if not even 3-digit, to have some more money left for soothing my wife 😉 …

RAEW, I'm guessing she would probably love some filament!!! I mean... your going to print things that will ultimately help her or she will appreciate 🙂

Cheers

I thought the mini was a move to higher bit processor an different voltage???  Was that just for the bed or something?

I ordered on assembled but my adjust that later.  I like the idea that you can change you order prior to shipping.  I want to save the money to buy it.  I am not sure how many heads to buy.

They upgraded the processor from an 8-bit to a 32-bit one. That has nothing to do with the voltage, which is 24V on both printers.

RE: Any info on the Prusa XL?

Speaking of heads, there seems to be a derth of information about what "tools" will be offered, other that extruders that you can put a variety of nozzles in, but only compatible with 1.75mm filament. I could REALLY use an extruder that will take 3mm filament. How about a milling head? Could get really messy unless you have aggressive (vacuum?) chip removal, and materials requiring cutting/cooling fluids would be REALLY messy. Or maybe a laser cutting head? Lots of safety and fume removal issues. Probably more doable would be a directed light scanning tool. That could be relatively easily added. That whole package (FFF/milling/laser/scanner) begins to look like the long-defunct Italian Fabtotum machine, two of which are now serving nicely as expensive door stops in my home.
