Homing error on X axis on 5.1.0-alpha1 firmware
Posting also for visibility, as I encountered two posts on Twitter/X that showed a homing error on the X-axis running the input shaper alpha firmware.
Before flashing, I read the Github release notes, stating:
"In rare cases the printer might have issues with homing, a temporary fix is to hold the print head for a while while homing."
Lo and behold, after flashing myself just now, I got the same error. The printhead starts homing for X repeatedly but fails to do so. I cut off power the first time, but if you wait, you'll get an system error and reboot.
Important to note: run the Bondtech IFS upgrade and Revo Micro with stock fan.
I'm leaving for work now, I'll check back later for a possible cause and/or fix, maybe someone did investigate or identified a fix already.
RE: Homing error on X axis on 5.1.0-alpha1 firmware
So I searched a bit more and found the Github Issue that is referenced around here also a few times. It mentioned tensioning X belts would solve the issue, which I could not confirm.
Since the Mini is vulnerable to a "slightly obstructed" axis also during the self-test (speaking from experience), this is what I checked. I noticed that the zip-ties on the sleeved hotend cable that is fastened on the extruder housing were not completely tight and it therefore it was not completely flat. I pushed it as flat as possible with my finger and ran homing again - it worked.
I installed new zip-ties and had no issue so far. Hope that this may help someone else encountering the issue.
RE:
Just upgraded from 4.4.1 to 5.1.0-alpha1.
Can't come past X-axis homing error.
Holding the X axis, it sounds like the printer will autodestruct.
What ever I do, I end up with a reeboot and x-axis homing alert.
I run an original mini with all the hardware upgrades and the David Warboss base
RE: Homing error on X axis on 5.1.0-alpha1 firmware
I ran into this same issue. I did a full factory reset with reinstalling the alpha and it seems to be working.
RE: Homing error on X axis on 5.1.0-alpha1 firmware
did you reset to factory defaults:
-before updating,
-after updating or
- both?
RE: Homing error on X axis on 5.1.0-alpha1 firmware
My process:
- Updated to 5.1.0
- First print was fine
- Next morning I had the homing error
- Factory Reset Everything
- Re-flashed 5.1.0
- Printing correctly now (fingers crossed)
RE: Homing error on X axis on 5.1.0-alpha1 firmware
I expect there are multiple etiologies for the homing error. I also did a factory reset first and re-flashing of the firmware, which did not fix the issue. However, it‘s referenced by multiple users as their fix
RE:
Thanks for sharing, interesting fix.
Makes sense, but IMO this method is a work-around and a fix of the symptom of the issue, not the cause. At least in my case, as the cause was the "obstructing" / protruding hotend cable loom, which can be easily pushed flatter and out of the way by retightening the zip ties.
RE: Homing error on X axis on 5.1.0-alpha1 firmware
The solution for me was the losening of the X-Axis. it was to tight, and after slightly unscrewing the thightening screws at the end of the X-Rod it had no Problem with homing
RE: Homing error on X axis on 5.1.0-alpha1 firmware
I tried these spacer clips and they solved the issue, super easy. Used a small screwdriver between the print head and the X axis gantry to validate it would help - it did, and was able to use that to print the clips. Now all is good, I'll just have to remember to remove those once the firmware hopefully addresses this. Thanks for sharing, rene-3!
I came across this temporary fix for the X axis problem with the new (IS) alpha firmware.

The weird thing, is that homing _does_ work if you select live Z axis adjustment
I haveto use some foam tape to make my mini+ home without X-axis error.
But on Z axis adjustment, the homing procedure does _not_ fail without intervention.
RE: Homing error on X axis on 5.1.0-alpha1 firmware
THANK YOU. I literally tried everything, this was the onlything that worked. Dunno feels like the firmware thinks that the bearings are more out from the extruder than they are. (mine is one of the first (later updated to a mini+ and factory assembled))

Interesting, I have this error on the Y-axis. It occurs with alpha 1 and alpha 2.

RE: Homing error on X axis on 5.1.0-alpha1 firmware
Hi, i have just updated to the alpha2 firmware, and so far so good, i can even send bigger files over WiFi...
I also sliced some test model from 2.7 slicer alpha, and this works too.
RE: Homing error on X axis on 5.1.0-alpha1 firmware
Okay, it was the belt tension. Oddly enough, the Mini's Y belt must be much more under tension than I am used to from the MK3S and MK4. Maybe the same thing is true for the X-axis? I haven't had this issue before flashing the input shaper alpha firmware.

RE:
Just for anyone still searching for solutions, here my 3 steps to the fix:
So i did an upgrade from 4.4.1 to 5.1.0-alpha1 without factory reset, and encountered two bugs: Being unable to upload files via PrusaLink and the X axis homing error. The homing error was so bad it failed every single time, just when I grabbed the printhead (which felt VERY wrong) while homing, it sometimes succeeded.
1. I tried to do a factory reset and clean install (this time already with 5.1.0-alpha2), which led me through the whole setup routine - just to fail at homing x axis immediately again.
2. Loosen belt tension - this seems to help some people, but not me.
3. Tighten belt tension - same as above, and this time, it helped! Which is strange, because for my taste the belt is way too stiff now. Also, homing now works, but sounds very violent. Hopefully this doesn't wear out parts faster now.
When the full version releases, I will definitely see if I can get away with less tension again. Anyway, now it works again. Also, the print quality and the speed gain for me is really worth the hassle in the end. Behaves like a whole new machine now.
Hope that may help someone.
RE: Homing error on X axis on 5.1.0-alpha1 firmware
For me with 5.1.0-alpha1, when performing homing movements with the correct belt tension, it felt like a double impact was occurring and the homing was failing. During successful homing with the belt loose or tight, the impact appears clearer and unique. During the assembly check, i noticed that the fine adjustment of the XZ axis was at the limit of the acceptable. The two end screws differed by almost 1 mm in their protrusion. After squaring the assembly and greatly reducing the protrusion, the impact seems softer and my homing problem seems to be solved.
Hope that may help.

I had the same x-axis homing issue. After upgrading to 5.10 beta the issue was resolved
