*#&@*#/× Layer Shift!

I have had relatively little trouble with spurious layer shifting, but this one was a doozy. This was a 10 hour print of two similar pieces with the same footprint size but different internal features. Started the print and went to bed. Awoke to find the pictured mess. Although the shift in the X direction (about 5mm) was much greater than the Y direction, it was a different absolute amount for one part than it was the other. Same for the Y axis. Difficult to measure, but it looked like the point of the Z axis where the shift occurred was one layer different between the two parts. Absolutely no mechanical binding of any axis was observed, and once the shift occurred, the rest of the print looked "normal". Subsequent trials where I seperated the two parts into individual prints proceeded without incident. Various theories have been advanced for layer shifting, are any definitive?

I'd file this under "shit happened" and move on 😇

I just had one yesterday, first one in many months. No idea why, same model I've printed about 10 times over the last few days. I just printed it again, and it worked fine. 3D printing voodoo, it is.

From my somewhat limited experience with layer shifts, assuming sheet adhesion is not the culprit it mostly appears to be caused by either infill issues (grid is notorious for it), or warping overhangs.

Just venting mostly, I have the machine on a UPS, so a momentarily power hiccup is not likely causative either.
