Post-print: spray on a clear coating?

Team,
There's a number of prints that I would like to give a protective layer that could make the print smoother.
So I thought about spraying a clear coating on the print.
PRO: it keeps the original color and adds a protective layer? (possibly even for rain?)
CON: ?

Material used most (in order): PLA, PETG

Is that something 'that people do' or the biggest mistake you can make? 🙂

Sure, I do it for stuff that gets exposed to the elements or handled roughly. I don't see a downside. Just be careful, a little goes a long way, and multiple thin coats are better than too much stuff that ends up running and creating bad looks.

Thank you for your feedback. Any advice on the type of coating I can use?

I usually use polyurethane spray. For duller effect, I've used varnish, or for wood filament regular wood stain. For minis, Testors Dullcote

I've used the XTC-3D Brush-On Coating a few times.  It does give a hard glossy surface.

It's a two-part mix, and I think it came from Amazon.  It was maybe 2-3 years ago.

Couple of comments here ...

If you want more of a sheen and gloss and not a hard plastic like coating, Pledge Revive Floor Coat will do it. Just use a mop brush and kind of flow it on. A little goes a long way.

I've never used like a clear Krylon, but I've tried Krylon metallics and never got them to thoroughly dry, always somewhat tacky and sticky. Tried with and without primer, tried nail polish drying spray, and tried drying in oven overnight, still tacky.

Best luck I had was to use the Pledge Floor Coat on top of the Krylon.
