Extruder temperature

New user here. Prusa Mini is my first 3D printer and I'm still learning so please bear with my newbie question.

When I went to print my first model, the extruder was already at 215 degrees but when I started my print the setting changed to 170 and the printer waited several seconds for it to cool down to that temperature before proceeding. The print failed, and then I started over and this time I manually tuned the extruder to 215 after loading the print, and it worked.

I double checked the filament settings in Prusa slicer for this file. The system preset is set to Prusament PLA which is what I am using. The temperature for both the first layer and other layers is set at 215 and the bed is at 60.  So I am trying to figure out why the extruder temperature on the printer is dropping to 170 when I start my print unless I manually override it.  Is this normal?

RE: Extruder temperature

If you look in the printers start gcode you will see that the extruder is initially set to 170 before it does mesh bed levelling.  This is by design. 170 is hot enough to soften harden filament so that mesh levelling doesn’t damage the bed but cool enough to minimise any leakage of filament.

you must be in expert mode in slicer, go to printer>gcode

RE: Extruder temperature

That makes sense but it seems to me that the temperature remained at 170 when the print started and failed because the filament got stringy and pulled the model off the bed. But I should give it another try to see if that's what really happened, maybe it was something else.  I tweaked the first layer calibration a bit and that might have helped too.

Other than that, everything went smoothly during setup and my test prints turned out well. Learning as I go. Thank you!
