Detailed Print With Supports

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4684837

I have a buddy who wants me to print some of these characters on my Mini, but using auto-generated supports just results in a print that is super fragile and pieces break off as I remove the supports...no matter how careful I am.  What are some tips to printing something like this with PLA?  What temperature and layer height should I be using?  Should I use manual supports?  If so, where should I be placing them in this example?

Appreciate the help.

That is a truly challenging print.  It does seem to be *just* printable but you are going to have to excavate it from the supports with modelling tools.  On an MMU I3 you might do it with soluble supports but on a Mini - Well, I wouldn't try it.

It has not been designed with FDM printing in mind and I somewhat doubt if the original designer ever printed it ...

If you *must* print it I suggest you slice the model into four or five parts and assemble post-printing.

Cheerio,

Great, thanks!  Yeah, I figured something like this was tough to do with FDM, but I thought I would ask.  All of my other (successful) prints have had much less detail and any supports attach to more smooth surfaces, not something this rigid.  I appreciate the reply.
