Beginner: JayoPLA doesn't print unsure how to calibrate
I recently bought a spool of Jayo PLA. It states the temp range is 200-230, so I just used the profile printing at 215 that I'm using for my other PLA filaments.
It will load (at 215) just fine, but then never prints anything quickly becoming clogged. I figured I needed to dial in the temperature so I tried to print some towers.
Starting at 190: Nothing prints, instant clog
Starting at 230: Prints some, not consistent and hard clogs by the 2nd layer
Between prints I'm able to unload it, frequently raising the temperature to 240 or 245 to get it so ooze first. So far I'm always able to unload it. I was curious if I had an issue with the hot end, so I switched back to one of my normal spools at 215. It loaded fine and printed without issues.
I noticed the diameter of the Jayo seems small, measuring I get about 1.68 so I adjusted that in PrusaSlicer and tried again at 215. Exact same results, the loading works but nothing prints.
Next I tightened the feed screw 2 turns and tried again. Same result, with some chunks bitten out of the PLA, I'll definitely need to do a good clean when I get this dialed in some. I undid this.
It's possible this PLA is highlighting an issue that the others tolerate. But I'm kind of stuck. I have been trying to avoid making physical adjustments to the printer because my other filament (IIIMax and Prusament) work fine. However, I'm lost as to why it loads and purges at 215 and then is almost instantly clogged.
I considered that 215 was to hot for the load/purge and possibly causing a heat creep problem, but I don't see any obvious way to adjust the load profiles and 215 is actually the lowest temperature.
Anyone have some advice on what I can do next?

Just my opinion... We all know, that every (normal) PLA should print pretty much normal at 215C -which your Jayo filament is recommending. Ok, to improve results (depending on printer used), it makes sense to decrease/increase temperature slightly... but this filament doesn't print at all at 215C (while other filaments you have print fine). And you also noticed filament is quite far from 1.75mm. So, what does that tell you about filament?
What I would do is, throw filament in a bin and try to forget -simple as that.

@bogdanh
lol the thought has crossed my mind. I figure I'll make this a learning opportunity first and then if it's not working I might just avoid this brand in the future. I'm taking out the PTFE tube today, I've never done that before, I might reseat the nozzle which I've also never done before. At the very least I'll learn some things about the machine and if nothing changes I might just avoid the brand in the future.
RE: Beginner: JayoPLA doesn't print unsure how to calibrate
Update: I've taken out the PTFE tube in the extruder. An inspection looked pretty good to me, but I went through the cleaning procedure just in case and it looks perfectly clean to me. I've reassembled and done a few cold pulls, which have no signs of burnt filament and again look clean to me (this was my first cold pull).
After this I've tried again, and while it loaded just fine I got the exact same results. This time I printed a z-calibration because it's short and has no retractions. I've attached a picture of it here are some of the regular characteristics you can see in the image.
At the bottom you can see as it starts, there's no extrusion, followed by a blob which I presume is clog breaking free. It then extrudes, although very inconsistently, until about the 3rd horizontal where it goes from inconsistent to clear gaps in extrusion, finally by the 4th horizontal it's clicking due to low extrusion and it's down hill from there.
I've contacted the seller, I can't think of anything they could say to fix this but I'll give them a chance. If anyone has any suggestions let me know, I'll hold for the seller and probably pursue a refund through Amazon. Considering the advertised tolerance is 1.75+/- .02 and I'm measuring between 1.68 and 1.70 which is clearly outside of tolerance. I understand it was a cheap filament but I'm surprised it's not just poor consistency I can't get it to print at all.

hi Csanders,
From what I can see on photo, I agree with you: it looks like filament characteristics is inconsistent (is changing all the time). Ok, maybe you'll manage to find settings at which it will print more or less normally. But will result be repeatable? We all know how frustrating it is, if print breaks in the middle after hours of printing.
I'm not experienced with various filament brands (there are sooo many), so I just follow recommendations of majority. And important, I always buy stuff that's also sold in brick stores, because they try to avoid getting bad reputation of selling bad stuff (Amazon and eBay... who cares there). I'm aware that I'm paying a bit more, but I prefer hassle free.
In that sense, thank you for reporting your experience with this filament.

RE: Beginner: JayoPLA doesn't print unsure how to calibrate
As an interesting note, I ordered 2 spools of Jayo and the 2nd spool came in late yesterday. Out of curiosity I put it in and ran the z-calibration which worked just fine no issues at all. That's a pretty short test, but now I have a spool of the same manufacturer which works at the standard 215 as expected. I'm going to ask for either a replacement for the Gray spool or a refund. Depending on how well they handle that will determine if I try them again, but so far I'm not impressed.
The spool that's working is Black, in the event that matters at all.

Most of the better-known filament manufacturers produce good stuff, even in their "budget" lines. I avoid budget/no-name brands for specifically this reason. The Jayo stuff is more expensive than some very reliable brands such as Paramount and even Inland. I've got links to reliable brands I've dealt with here if you're interested. The last thing I would suggest is modifying anything on my printer or basic settings to accommodate a cheap brand of filament.

Great thanks, I wasn't aware of (or forgot about) that list. I'll certain consult that going forward! Also on a side note, I've read several of your posts as I've been learning I it's a great resource thank you for taking the time to put it together.
RE: Beginner: JayoPLA doesn't print unsure how to calibrate
Glad the info is useful. I confess to getting caught up in the "3D printing deals" myself now and then. I've got several partial spools of mixed grade budget brand filament that can't use because I won't be able to match the type or price again. I'm slowly gaining enough discipline to find a good grade of filament and stick with one brand so I can always get more of the same stuff reliably. Meanwhile, I slowly use the "bargain" stuff up for things like Live-Z calibration and trash prints.
If I can live with black, Overture Eco is good quality inexpensive PLA. For more color variety, Polymaker is very good while still inexpensive. You can also order direct.

RE: Beginner: JayoPLA doesn't print unsure how to calibrate
Hello,
I have encountered the same issue and I've found a solution that I want to share. The post is old but the topic is still present.
I am using a Prusa Mini+. By fate I have stumbled upon Jayo and after some failed prints I started looking for solutions. I didn't want to waste the material so I have came up with the following settings that works super for me.
Temp first layer: 230
Temp for other layers: 225
Speed: 90
Flow multiplier: 125
Z height: 1.7
The temperature and speed are clear but the flow multiplier and z height should be used as reference. The latter parameters depend on the printer and shuold be defined during a calibration procedure. It would be a good idea to define in the slicer a new material profile with the temperature and the speed.
In the end I was very sattisfied with the print and the material didn't turned out so bad. Actually the print was good quality.
RE: Beginner: JayoPLA doesn't print unsure how to calibrate
This seems to work but it's not normal so I will try and return the filament.
Last time I buy cheap filament.
