Wierd noises in Extruder

Hello,

I am starting to hear some wierd and loud noises from Extruder. Can you guys help me with your knowledge?

I already contacted official PRUSA SUPPORT, but I do not have time to dissasemle my MINI+ (pre-assembled version) today so I want your opinions too.

Here is the video:

The noises which I do not like and are not normal in my POV are from 6s to 11s, then from 57s and then at the end of the video from 1m14s.

Can you check it and tell me what do you think please?

Official PRUSA SUPPORT recommended to me that I need to dissassemble the Extruder, loose the motor screws and push together the gears and tighten the screws again. And if this will not help. I need to remove the extruder motor and start a print without filament to check if the sound will be here (without the gears) so if the motor is not broken or something.

Thank you.

I hear some clicking if that is what you are referring to.

Yes at the end of the video you can hear it very loudly.

Yesterday I tried just load and unload filament without filament and it was really hard to listen to. The noises were really loud and the gear just stop and I can hear loud noise but without the gear moving. Then I tried disassemble the extruder and run the load or unload filament only with the gear on the motor and that sound was ok. So I will today assemble it back and I will hope that it will be working.

I agree with Prusa support. Since you got the gear movement in the picture at the 57s section, you can see the gears reverse when the click/clunk happens. That tells me the gears are not meshed closely enough. So there's lots of gear lash when switching directions. The most likely solution is indeed to take the extruder apart and shift the motor to ensure there's minimal (but still a tiny bit of) gear lash.

Can you explain to me a little bit further? My english is not so good. I do not know what you mean by the: you can see the gears reverse at 57s in the video. That is just retraction? And with the gear lash you mean like a space between the gears?

Thank you.

Yes, the gears changing direction is retraction. What it seems like to me from the video is the gears are too far apart. So when the motor changes direction, there's some empty space the gear on the motor (the pinion gear) has to move through to contact the other side of the larger gear that rotates the one actually moving the filament. The two gears should be almost touching to minimize this effect. Since the larger drive gear is held rigidly in the printed part, you have to loosen the motor to move it around to mesh the gears more tightly.

I found this page with some really good example photos. It's for RC cars, but the concept for our printer extruder is exactly the same: http://thercspot.blogspot.com/2010/05/proper-gear-messing.html

I believe your extruder is set like the top photo. You want it like the bottom one.

So I try the thing to make the gears close to each other. I think right now I have little bit louder loading/unloading filament, but the actual work and retractions are much quiter and I am not hearing the clicking when retracting anymore.

So I do not know if I did it correctly, but right now in my POV it helps.

What do you thing?

Thank you very much.
