USB won’t let computer reboot

Prusa mini with the beta firmware.  Not sure when it started but recently I noticed that with the printer plugged into my raspberry pi 3 it would hang on reboot, it would also not startup with printer plugged in.  Thought it was a pi problem and switched to octoprint installed on an HP a workstation and Ubuntu. I have the same behavior, with it hanging with a udev message on the screen. When starting up cold it would hang until I removed the usb cable to the printer. Soon as I unplugged the printer machine boots up fine, once it is fully booted I can plug the printer back in.  Tried it with an intel nuc I have with just debian, same behavior.  Just for completeness, today I used a pi 4 that I removed from another printer and same behavior.

Other weirdness is if I unplug the printer to let the machine boot it never comes out of serial print mode and octoprint can not connect to it until I reboot the mini.

I do not think I have this problem on my Mac.  I will check it tonight.

Do you have USB as a bootable option on the Pi or Computer ?  It might be detecting the printer as a bootable USB drive for some reason and then hanging at that point.

For sure the 2 PC's have USB as a bootable option.  But I don't think that is the issue as when I was watching the NUC boot, it wasn't even getting through the POST process, it would hang and then if I unplug it will show the options for Bios/boot menu/etc

I also have this problem with a raspberrypi 4, prusa mini+ using RC1 firmware. I tried different boot modes, i.e. only sd card, but still, it never boot if printer is attached and powered on. When I unplug the printer or power it down, it immediately boot. I have an usb camera also plugged in, this doesn't cause trouble.  I never tried with another firmware, the mini+ is weeks new and I immediately changed it to RC1. I had an mk3s, with the same pi but booting on a usb hd, no trouble. On the mk3s the pi was setup to boot on usb first as it was booting from an usb hd, I had hope that changing this boot mode would do it on the mini+, but as I said, no changes. I didn't try usb hd boot with the mini+, I wanted to get rid of the hd, but I think that would be surprising if it would fix the issue.

RE: USB won’t let computer reboot

This issue is seriously weird. I have recently updated my Mini+ to the newest stable firmware (4.4) and I now have a similar problem, although my setup is completely different.

I run Octoprint in a VM on my home server and I have the printer passed through to that VM. Since the firmware upgrade, the VM will not boot with the printer plugged in. The UEFI of the VM does not even appear, it just hangs with a black screen. As soon as i disconnect / power off the printer, the VM boots just fine. I have several other USB devices passed through to that VM and they all work.

This must be a very weird firmware bug?!

RE: USB won’t let computer reboot

I have this exact issue too. I run Proxmox and have a guest that runs most of my Docker containers. I've been passing a camera and the Prusa Mini+ across to this Guest without problems for about a year. I've upgraded the firmware and it appears the guest will now not boot. If I remove the Mini+ from the VM it boots fine (with other USB devices passed thru).

Has a fix or workaround been identified? What's the feasibility of downgrading the firmware?
