Retraction noisy on new Prusa

Hi,

I have been printing with my new Prusa Mini, and it is doing quite well.

However I did notice that during retractions the extruder motor has something like a rattle noise.

Just wondering if anybody else had the same noise from their printer?

Perhaps I should try loosening the idler tension?

That was my first thought, try loosening the idler a bit.
Otherwise if your prints are underextruded Try to attach it a bit.
If there is too little pressure between the gear and filament, it cannot be pumped. That also makes noises that are not nice.
Or you try to clean your nozzle, a clogged nozzle can cause the same problem (not for retraction only)
Have you tuned any extruder speeds or do you print via profile?

It’s better to give than to receive. Especially advice.

@padigree

Thanks, I will try loosening the idler a bit, thanks for the advice.

I am printing with pretty standard profiles fromprusaslicer, only changing infill % and bottom layers.

Don't forget that the extruder is geared and that there must be some play in the gears.

A clicking noise from the gears on retraction is quite normal; if it's more that that then either the gears need adjustment (unlikely) or the filament tension is incorrect.

I notice that after unloading the filament, I notice that the plastic has been "dug" into by the extruder, which I think seems like tension is to high. Anybody else noticed the same when they unloaded filament?

Yes, this will happen to an extent.  When driving the filament from one side, the gear teeth do have to dig in to the filament more that with the Bondtech gears of the Mk3.

The amount of this digging in is something that you will learn to judge; you need to have the tension as light as possible without having feed issues.

I’m hearing quite a bit of noise too but only during some parts of prints.

I have noises too.

What do you think, where can that noise come from?

Which particular noise?
the Unlubricated Linear Bearings noise?,

or the retract / detract noise?

the fast move noise,

or something else?

@hforum

Which filament are you using?  I’ve found that different brands make different noises.  My first video was Filamentive rPLA, this next one is Sunlu.

Yeah, realised that it depends which filament is beeing used. Printed something in TPU yesterday and the noise was gone. Today, with a different PLA much quiter.

I was having similar issues.  I took it apart and found that the nut that slides into the back of the tensioner was not all the way inserted.  During assemble and testing there has to have been enough material in the hole to hold tension on the material, but after a few runs in the field became loose.  That little nut can slide a ways into its slot without touching the tensioning hole.

Hi again,

I captured the sound of the retract/detract on video, it is the loudest noise, otherwise the machine is perfectly quiet.

Anybody have the same kind of noise, the sound is the same even when not loaded with filament.

Hi! Have you managed to fix that pig like oink oink retraction/deretraction sound? It irritates so much...

RE: Retraction noisy on new Prusa

Hello, I received my Mini+ today and was sad to hear this awful grinding sound on retracts and on loading filament.  I took the extruder apart and noticed the gears were engaged very tight and the bearing was binding.  I loosened the two screws that attach the E stepper motor and easily loosened the fit of the gears.  I then reassembled the extruder and the grinding sound is gone.

I can now hear there may be a bit of play in the gearing (clicking) and will need to tighten up the fit after the next print.

RE: Retraction noisy on new Prusa

Following up on previous post: I can't find a happy medium in the gear fitment.  Too tight and I get grinding/vibration sound on retracts and filament loading.  Too loose and I get clicking on retracts.  I will try some of the techniques described in this thread:
