RE: Original Prusa MINI & MINI+ WIFI Troubleshooting.

Hi,

I bought this ESP module: https://www.az-delivery.de/products/esp8266-01s-mit-breadboardadapter?variant=37772547154

When I have a look into this guide, I have a ESP-01S module:

I used the official guide for inserting the ESP module, all went well. Then, I did the firmware update, edited my wifi data, all went well. But I get no connection. The ESP is blinking (blue LED) but the connection cannot be established. I remove and put back the module several times (printer was turned off and without cord, of course), but this didn't help either.

Is there anything I can do to get a connection?

Does anyone know if the firmware binary for the ESP is available separately? I have tried about 6 different ESP modules some i've had around for awhile and some recently purchased from two different suppliers i've seen in this thread and all are failing to flash. The printer does seem to detect at least some of them, because at bootup it asks if you would like to flash it. At this point i would love to just get the binary file and flash it manually with a TTL cable from my laptop. I've worked with ESPs for sometime and know how to do this.

for both Mike93 and d0ug: Try a different module (this is why its good to get the 4pack or 5pack off amazon) they are often not "good".

Doug you mentioned having them around for a while, I would purchase a new set as it sounds highly odd that youd have 6 failures in a row I am guessing its not the exact correct module that you had lying around (but you think it is)

Can I change the ESP modules easily? I mean, they need a firmware, right? When I just remove the broken one and take a new one I have not the prusa-esp-firmware on the new one. How can I get the prusa-esp-firmware on the new module?

I think these are just transmitters and receivers.  I would turn it off but I think you can replace one.

The espxxxx must indeed be provided with the correct firmware.

So after installing a new espxxxx module, it seems to me that you are forcing the 4.4.0 update again.

It is also possible that the printer recognizes the new espxxxx and sends you in the right direction with the QR code.

The help specifically states about the firmware flash that

Upon the Wizard, you will be greeted by a Wi-Fi wizard. If not, on the LCD screen navigate to Home -> Settings -> Network -> Wi-Fi -> Setup Wi-Fi module.

So yes, you can reflash the ESP firmware directly from the menu, without doing the MINI (re)update

It is like written above: You can flash the ESP module via the Prusa mini itself. No need to re-install die entire printer firmware. I can confirm that my Mini is connected to my WLAN after taking another module from another brand. I will indicate it in the list.

Thank you all!

I experience the same issue (MacOS Ventura 13.1, Safari 16.2). @nonnus, did you find a fix?

  • Every time I connect to prusa link on my browser I am asked to enter api key which is not a great user experience, please add `password` metadata to the text field so the browser can offer to store the key / password automatically

Odd, I do not have this experience.

My bad, I should have included my browser details: Safari 15.6 (latest) on MacOS 12.5 (latest)
Every time I access my printer ip I get this:

RE: Original Prusa MINI & MINI+ WIFI Troubleshooting.

Are there any WiFi requirements to get the Mini connected?

I've tried, but cannot get a WiFi connection going.

Tried with 6 different ESP's so far, but it always fails, though not always the same error.

1st ESP: Mini won't boot and the screen stays fully white

2nd: firmware installs correctly, but simply never connects to WiFi

3rd&4th: Error when flashing firmware

5th: firmware installs correctly, but simply never connects to WiFi

6th: Error when flashing firmware

Somehow I doubt that all 6 ESP's are broken.

The WiFi settings are as follows:

encryption: WPA2

band: 2.4GHz

Mode: 802.11g+802.11n

Prusa Mini FW4.4.1

What about all 6 ESP are not compatible? For me, flashing the ESP wasn't a problem but getting the connection was. Check the List carefully. What ESP do you use?

Do you have any typos in the WiFi password etc. file? Check it. Avoid blank spaces in SSID or in the password.

Posted by: @mike93-2  What ESP do you use?

All ESP-01s.

Found my mistake:
I used quotation marks around the SSID. It doesn't work with them, but it works without quotation marks, even when the SSID has spaces in it.

So the following works:

ssid=My WiFi

Now multiple of the ESP's work. The slot seems to be finicky though, since I had to reinsert and check each ESP multiple times, until they worked. The othertimes, they don't seem to connect with the buddy board properly.

RE: Original Prusa MINI & MINI+ WIFI Troubleshooting.

Yes, that’s true. Blank spaces etc  can! not need to make problems. I would like to have {} for every line in the Wi-Fi settings, then it would be clear  it’s important to have nothing else than the ssid or password after =.

Thank you so much for this.  Double clicking the knob did it for mine. I had reformatted a new jump drive and kept clicking the x to reset.  Thank you!!!

RE: Original Prusa MINI & MINI+ WIFI Troubleshooting.

Hi there,

there is another interesting observation I would like to spread and maybe find further ideas to tackle the issue.

WiFi setup worked flawlessly with the ESP01S from AZ Delivery. I have a strong and stable connection, although there are a few meters between router and printer.

BUT:
the stable connection lasts as long there is no USB pendrive plugged in. As soon as I connect any pendrive (tired three different pendrives so far including the original one) the WiFi connection is completely gone.

so first conclusion:

Maybe it makes sense to check connectivity after installation without USB pendrive. AND there are at least a few meters to go in front of me in order to solve the pendrive interference issue. If someone has any hints, I would be greatful.

RE:

I still think that not all ESP-01S from Az Delivery are working. I wasn't able to flash them. It depends on the batch.

Is it a USB3 drive and what drive is it? I think there are good and bad drives available. Since I have a kind of this USB-Display mod my USB drive is far away from the ESP module, so I cannot say if this is happening for me as well. https://www.printables.com/de/model/37961-prusa-minimini-display-usb-mod

Did you try aluminium foil around the usb drive? This could shield the RF wave of the drive.

RE:

Been using the wifi module now for 6 months or more and it was always really slow, almost painfully so, but now i am having issues where it never finishes copying. have tried multiple USB sticks all formatted and new, I have no idea whats changed.

I can still copy files that are small like 2MB or less (and those go instantly and quickly) but anything over a few MB and it just goes SO slow and in the past they did indeed finish but for about a month now, I have had maybe 1 of 30 attempts, actually finish.   They get stuck at random spots like 48% or whatever.

I know the firmware is still buggy but WTH?  Its almost unusable.   Im wondering if my module "went bad" and need to try another new one.

To everyone else who is still setting theirs up for first time:  Yes the ESP modules are cheap and only maybe 50% of them actually work (even sometimes it will flash firmware OK but won't connect to your wifi, I had this issue and had to try my 2nd (of 4) ESP modules)

RE: Original Prusa MINI & MINI+ WIFI Troubleshooting.

I am not sure about differences within the same set of modules, but I posted my experience earlier in this thread that might help:  https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/postid/623885/

The first ESP modules that I purchased were absolutely awful slow with terrible signal strength and intermittent connectivity.  I had nothing but frustration.  Consider trying a module from a different manufacturer and that might resolve your slow performance.  My MINI has been working great and all I did was buy an ESP from a different manufacturer.
