Provided USB stick issues?

Hi all,

yesterday I encountered the Watchdog Reset issue with my mini. I think it was mainly due to the Prusa USB stick. It was just really hot (felt like hot tap-water).

I just reset the Mini, used another USB stick, and now 15h later no issues (it's a 29h print).

I had already noticed that the Prusa USB stick is really slow. The same files transfer 5 times faster using my other (USB 2.0) sticks.
Also unmounting the USB drive takes ages, and sometimes I have to force unmount it, in order to get it unmounted in OSX.

I was just wondering, am I the only with this issues (slow read/write, slow unmounting, stick getting hot)?

ETA: just found out I could get the complete errorlog of the Watchdog reset, forgot to do that. Will see if it is still possible

The original Prusa USB stick is well known for having issues.

@bobcousins

good to know. I searched but could only find an issue about the USB on the i3, not with the stick itself 🙂

What a coincidence. I got my first watchdog reset yesterday since receiving my Mini in February. I had noticed the USB stick getting progressively hotter over time. Tried the print again and got another reset. Tried a different stick and had no problem.

Have you updated to the latest firmware (4.1.0)? There have been a number of fixed for USB / watchdog issues.

@gordon-w

hi Gordon, I'm running the latest firmware (4.1.0)

Since I'm still printing I can't check if there's info in the system logs as to what went wrong

I set mind aside and I am using my own USB. The USB that comes with the printer is defective. I encountered this issue too in the middle of the 2nd print.

My prusa usb still work fine, it hot when it is printing. Slow speed is acceptable for me due to printer doesn't need high speed usb. It survive from my washing machine too :-).

If the Prusa USB is hot, I highly recommend you stop using it before it ruins a print.

Got my mini today and had the same issue, it turn out to also be the POS thumb drive. Thing was pretty hot to the touch.

Well, my Prusa usb stick died pretty quickly. I'm using my own usb stick since the very first month of printing 😆

In the meantime I've switched to Octoprint since the last 2 months or so.
No more USB stick hassles 😛

Does Octoprint work with the mini? I searched a bit yesterday but didn't find a definitive answer.

RE: Provided USB stick issues?

I am about to try octoprint with my Mini tomorrow when my Pi Zero W arrives. Already have some full size Pis doing other tasks. Like the size of the Zero W. Already 3d printed a small case for it and just plan to double stick tape it it to the right side of the Z axis extrusion to make for a nice clean setup. It would have been nice if they had just integrated a Pi header onto the buddy board so you could stick a mini or full size pi into the electronics box, obviously have to make the electronics box a bit taller with all the cable clutter in there.

I am getting a sneaking feeling that the WebUI on the mini isn't going to be much more than a status page and perhaps maybe eventually the ability to upload an stl file? While the processor on the Mini is more powerful than the i3, it's still got no where near the horse power of even the oldest Pis. I don't think you'll ever see something even close to octoprint's capabilities running on the Mini's own processor.

Perhaps they can still do this idea, there is probably enough connectivity through that header they were planning to use with the esp8266 wifi module to power a Pi Zero W and allow it to communicate to the stm32 processor over ttl serial or an i2c bus. A modified taller lid for the electronics enclosure would probably allow a Pi Zero W to be crammed in there as well.

@d0ug

Watch out, I think Raspberry Pi Zero is deprecated on the Octoprint website.

Ditto on a Pi Zero for Octoprint: simply not enough horsepower to run reliably. Lots of anecdotal evidence it can't even send gcode reliably while hosting a camera or even moderate ethernet traffic.

@tim-m30

Yeah I have read about the performance issues with it and trying to do the camera/octolapse. I am not planning on doing that, but just to merely have working ability to send stuff to it over the network. From what I read it should work well for that purpose, but anything camera related is a no-go.
