New BondTech IFS not recognizing filament

Just installed the Bondtech IFS extruder as an upgrade to the mini+. Installed the internal filament sensor to replace the stock external filament sensor. How is the filament sensor part supposed to work? I try to load filament but can’t. I push filament in as far as I can but the sensor doesn’t ever detect it and so won’t load. Is there some step I missed, or does it load a different way, or must there be something wrong with my install?

RE: New BondTech IFS not recognizing filament

It works like the old sensor. I have two installed and I can't remember anything extraordinary (not mentioned in the Bondtech installation guide)  I had to do to get them to work. If it doesn't detect filament there must have been a mistake in the installation process. I'd start all over again to make sure I didn't miss a step as per Bondtech's installation guide. Or contact Bondtech support. It is kind of difficult to help here without being able to guide you through it.

Did you switch the plus and minus wire in the plug that connects to the printer's motherboard?

See,

I switched them in the extruder housing. Then saw after I had assembled it that switching shouldn’t be performed for later firmware. So rather than taking it all apart I switched them in the electronics box too to “undo” the switching.

Oh. Hmm. I might have mixed up the instructions on swapping wires. The stepper motor wire swap is not to be performed, but the filament sensor wire swap is to be performed, even for later firmware?

No wire swaps required. Just follow the instructions here:

What about the swap at 10:30 in the video?

Ok I undid the swap in the electronics box that I had done and it works now. So the swap in the video was correct for my firmware. Now that it works tho something else isn’t right - the first layer calibration itself moves smooth but when traveling there’s stuttering. I changed the Estep too so not sure if that has anything to do with jt

  1. I had the same issue as the original poster. I checked the sensor itself all the cables and my setup. I took everything apart and put it back together. It still didn’t work. Then I found this thread. I just swapped the wires as seen in the video. Now everything works. There is no mention of this in the instructions on the website, but it makes perfect sense as the connector to the filament sensor is flipped upside down.
I have my Mini on firmware 5.1.2. Maybe thus wasn’t an issue on an earlier firmware.
TLDR: It seems to me you need to swap the sensor wires or modify the housing to fit the connector the right way.

RE: New BondTech IFS not recognizing filament

Just chiming in to say that I had swapped the wires for the filament sensor, because the Bondtech instructions clearly said so, and when the IFS did not work, it double and triple checked everything, disassembled/reassambled etc, and in the end, I swapped them back and then it worked again: For me at least, the instructions were wrong (it's ofc possible that I had done the first swap incorrectly, ie re-inserting the pins without actually swapping them, but I don't think so.)

Other than that, for me the IFS inside of the extruder is much better than the external Prusa one although it is the same PCB and mechanism, because now flexible filaments work great and with the external one I had so many troubles that I had had to remove the external filament sensor completely.
