Incorrect PETG temperature setting in the firmware?

Hi all,

I am new to 3D printing, just got a Prusa Mini, and am trying to print with PETG. The spool says the nozzle and other temperature should be 250C+/- 10. The prusa slicer says the first layer will 230C and next layers 240C. All good enough so far. Now when I try to print the model, the nozzle temperature on the Prusa is set to 170C, even though the material is set to PETG.

My workaround is that I am manually going in the setting while its printing and set the nozzle temp back to 240C

Is this a bug? or am I doing something wrong?

Firmware v4.0.4

Thanks.

RE: Incorrect PETG temperature setting in the firmware?

Where are you reading the 170C temperature from? It should drop to 170C during the mesh bed levelling at the beginning, and then go back to the set temperature for the print, does it do it this way for you or does it stay at 170C even during the print?

By the way, fw 4.0.5 is out - you might want to try that out too. Many users reported improvements after they updated.

Silly question but are you sure you're using the GCode you've sliced for PETG and not some other version (perhaps sliced for some other material)?

[...] Now when I try to print the model, the nozzle temperature on the Prusa is set to 170C, even though the material is set to PETG.

That is the "no ooze" temperature used to soften the filament to avoid any bed damage, yet not create little dots all over the build plate during mesh bed leveling. This 2-step warmup process is intentional. Wait a few minutes and let it run through and you'll see it heat up to 170C, complete mesh bed leveling, then increase up to print temps. Don't go fixing it without understanding it! Just let it sit and watch it complete.

It's a little overwhelming at first, but the Mini is a nice little printer. Have fun with it!

@bobstro

Yeah, that's what I was saying, it should go back up after the mesh bed levelling is done. Did you (yogi, original poster here) change the temperature from the tune menu right away, or did you do it when the print had already started?

I say "back up" because I always do the preheat first, so it has to cool down to do the MBL in my case.

I'm new to this as well.
I have seen this in the test prints.
Are there predefined temperatures
in the g code files that override
the temp one sets in tuning?
I see the temp change to 170
when it completes the 12 point
prenda orintation. Then 215 when
it completes first layer.

Our 3D printers are profoundly dumb devices. There's no great master program tracking anything. Much like the light dimmer in your living room, it will operate at whatever setting it was last changed to. The difference is that you can make changes manually on the front panel of the printer using the Tune menu OR in gcode. Whichever setting is encountered last is the one that's used.

When the slicer generates gcode, there are generally three times it inserts gcode commands to adjust temperatures:

  1. With the Prusa-supplied Mini start gcode, a "no ooze" nozzle temperature of 170C is set. This is coded into the start gcode (See Printer Settings->Custom G-code->Start G-code in PrusaSlicer. The Prusa-supplied Mk3 profiles do not do this.
  2. At the start of the job when the nozzle is heated up to the 1st layer print temperature (See Filament Settings->Filament->Temperature->Nozzle settings in PrusaSlicer).
  3. When the 1st layer is completed, the nozzle is adjusted to the other layers setting (See Filament Settings->Filament->Temperature->Nozzle settings in PrusaSlicer).

When you make a manual adjustment using the printer Tune menu, you're just overriding the currently-set temperature. Just like walking into the living room and adjusting the lighting, you've changed what was there. As the print proceeds, if it encounters another temperature setting gcode command, it will again change the same setting. This is just like when you get comfortable in the living room and someone walks in and flips off the light. It's just a question of timing as to which one "holds".

At the time I was only using the test files on usb drive. Now that I've used Slicer. I can see why the test files do not work well.
