Firmware update using SD card

I apologize if this has been asked too many times, I did a search and found the question was asked a couple of years ago and wanted to see if there is a firm technical issue with implementing this or it isn't a priority (understandable btw).

I am trying reduce the number of PC's around the house and haven't had a computer next to the printer since I purchased the MK3s. When I update the firmware now, I need to undock my laptop and take it into the basement where the printer is for the temporary connection. I know it is possible using octopi (mainly used for it's camera currently) but if it's possible via SD card that would greatly simplify things.

RE: Firmware update using SD card

"When I update the firmware now" I'm not sure you can do a firmware upgrade from OctoPrint. I think the usual path is either PrusaSlicer or SD card. I think you might be able to use Pronterface but I'm not sure.

You do know that you can perform a firmware upgrade using an SD card?

The basic function OctoPrint is to remove the necessity of either physically carrying an SD card to the printer or permanently connecting a PC to the printer. Everything else grew from that either as extended functions or as plugins. Most often implement using a Raspberry pi with Wifi.

Maybe the OctoPi plugin I'm remembering was for my non-Prusa i3. I've been using OctoPi for many years, but have recently just gotten into the habit of printing from the SD card only, mainly because I frequently re-purpose my Pi's.

I  thought I could do the update from an SD card, but when I looked this morning all I could find instructions for was using a computer/USB. I will look again. Thank you for the quick reply.

Firstly, you have posted in the Mini subforum and I believe he question relates to the mk3.

Secondly, yes you can update the mk3 firmware via octoprint, if you have the relevant plugin installed. Its the only way I do it.

@texy

Personally I wouldn't risk it, but that's just me, I'm old and cautious. Using the SD card removes a few fault possibilities from the exercise and bear in mind how rarely you upgrade firmware.
