does the filament sensor work actually?

can anyone snap the filament during printing and check if the printer stops?

i have no better explanation that the firmware 4.0.1 does not use the filament sensor.

i dont have a clue what else can be wrong at my mini.

Best Answer by weak:

@pingu shouldn't the pinout be available on github?

Yes, it works on mine.

Didnt cut the filament, but did run out when using the filament samples that came with the Mini

Worked correctly

can you take a picture of your motherboard conector, and one of the opened filament sensor? this are only 2 screws on the sensor, and you can lift the top part. a picture of the pinout/ cable colours would help very much!

Sorry, that was in electric box.

Will try again in sensor when my print finishes

This may be a totally stupid comment, but I noticed I had to enable the filament sensor somewhere in the firmware settings. It was off initially. Not sure if the machine had asked me during setup and I maybe did press the wrong button out of impatience to start my first print. It does work. I am sure because I had cases where the printer prompted me to load filament. I did not have a run-out situation so far, though.

yes you have to enable it either in the menu or with m comands via pronterface, octoprint ore something

i figured it out:

>>>m119
SENDING:M119
Reporting endstop status
x_min: open
x_max: open
y_min: open
y_max: open
z_min: open
z_max: open
filament: TRIGGERED
>>>m119
SENDING:M119
Reporting endstop status
x_min: open
x_max: open
y_min: open
y_max: open
z_min: open
z_max: open
filament: open

for all the people did not ordered the filament sensor like me, because they had laying around stuff from mmu2 or something. thanks folks for figuring it out together.

Silly question here 🙂 Does the filament sensor reduce the risk or fire, or is it 99% for the purpose of stopping a print job if you run out of filament?

It makes no difference with regard to fire risk. The hotend will maintain its temperature whether filament is present or not. If there is a fault with the hotend temperature regulation, the heater can get to many hundred degrees.

So I would say it's 100% to avoid a failed print if filament runs out.

Mine most definitely works.

When a spool is about to run out, I try to make the change at a place in the print where it will not show (infill or support) and I try to watch it, but I've missed it a couple of times and it stopped the print and I successfully loaded a new spool and resumed the print.

@bobcousins

Good to know about the fire safety aspect. Thanks!

@jsw

Also good to know that it works well to prevent print failure due to lack of filament. Nice to have confirmation from real users!

Thanks!
