Cannot change filament mid-print

Currently running Firmware 4.0.2. When I pause mid-print and attempt to change to a different filament, nothing happens; the current filament will not unload and therefore I cannot load the new filament. The print will not resume, even with the current filament; everything just locks up and all I can do is a soft reset which ruins the print up to that point. I have not seen this problem discussed elsewhere. Am I the only one this is happening to? Will upgrading to 4.0.4 solve this issue?

Put the filament change points in Prusaslicer before you slice your object.

Works fine with 4.02 firmware ...

I've had similar problems where I failed to load properly during a scheduled filament change (M600), and then tried to manually pause and load filament.  Except for me it loaded, then immediately unloaded and tried to print empty.

The 4.0.3 update release notes said something about fixing loading issues.  This may address your problem.

That said, are you adding a filament change in the slicer as @steve-4 suggested?  If you're using PrusaSlicer, it's now easy.

4.0.2 has bugged loading and unloading of filament, at least I was not able to successfully do filament change. Especially as it asks whether color is correct only once.

This would be fine IF I  was slicing a .STL file, but what I  am trying to do is print the Prusa logo plate that is included as a sample on the supplied memory stick, with two different colors. As such, it exists only as a gcode file. I watch the print and pause as soon as it starts to print the lettering layer. It gives me the option of changing the filament at that point, it just doesn't work. Seems like a pretty serious bug. Hopefully, 4.0.4 will fix it.

Was it this?

@syd

Yes. I want to print the letters in a contrasting color, but Pause-Tune-Change filament doesn't work, at least in 4.0.2.

Great! Now that you have the.stl file, you can slice your own gcode properly. Enjoy!

Well, apparently I am not getting my point across. The. Whole. Issue. Is that a .STL file for this object IS NOT CONTAINED on the supplied memory stick, only the .gcode file, which cannot be edited to insert a filament change command, at least with the tools I have. Am I missing something simple?

I think syd has provided you with a link so that you can download the .stl and accomplish what you want.

The link only opens a photo of the item as printed, not the .STL file itself. That file is probably available elsewhere on the site, but why should I have to go looking for it? My POINT from the beginning of this thread is that the firmware seems to have a problem. I'll be able to install 4.0.4 later today to see if that fixes it.

Hey, just trying to be helpful, on the "Hardware and software help" forum.  No need to get touchy.

If you follow that link and click the giant orange button that says Download, you can download the .stl file.  Edit: Direct link.

The point I and others on this thread have been making since the beginning is that what you're doing is not the proper way to change colors.  Use the slicer instead.

As for why you should go looking for model files, in general you should never run gcode that you didn't slice yourself.  I'm 100% sure what's on the stick from Prusa is benign, but that's the exception, not the rule.

Installed 4.0.4, still cannot change the filament from the Pause/Tune/Change filament sub-menu. Will this ever be fixed?

RE: Cannot change filament mid-print

I ran into the same issue on my Prusa Mini where it wouldn't let me change filament mid print.  Turns out if you hit Pause, then try Tune -> Change Filament it doesn't work, but if you just go directly into the Tune -> Change Filament (without hitting Pause first) it works.

Hope this helps.
