RE: Bolt Factory issues in Blender 2.8

You cant print small threads parallel to the bed like that - and expect them to work.  Not with a 0.4mm nozzle, you just don't have the precision to do the small corners required by threads that size.  Yes the bolt will be stronger due to the layer direction but just look at your pic, its more like its ribbed than a screw thread.
Larger items with big chunky threads it can work for.  For example the printed belt tensioners many people print for the Ender 3 are set up like that and work well, really well, for example https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3573270 .  They aren't small threads though.  That example is a classic on how to design it right, easy to print, enough tolerance, parts oriented to minimise the weaknesses of 3d printed parts etc.  I have that type on both x and y axis on my cr10s and they are smooth and function perfectly.

Printing with the thread in z means you can take advantage of the thinner layer heights available.  A 0.1mm layer height means you are getting that precision, as opposed to 0.4mm from a default nozzle.

Personally I don't print anything less than 8mm as fasteners made from metal are cheap and far far superior to anything you can print.  Even when it comes to the nut threads its usually better to design a pocket for a square nut (like is done on the Mk3 construction) or use a heat set brass insert as you will get far stronger and more robust/reliable results.

That makes sense now you've pointed out. It was a suggestion I saw in a video on the subject of Bolt Factory on YouTube. But there is a definition issue, and also probably below M6 it isn't worth it for size and detail - and cost.

At this stage, very early in ownership, I'm playing with it, to try to see what works and what doesn't. Help from you guys has helped reduce the wasted time.

Cheers

Pad

On aliexpress you can buy inserts, then you can have metal threats in plastic and use metal bolt.

See youtube for info movies on this.
