Reasons I (reluctantly) went back to OctoPrint
I really want to ditch OctoPrint for PrusaLink. I installed PL on one of my printers (via raspPi), tried to get my usual things done, but couldn't. I have to go back to OctoPrint. Here is why (in order of importance to me).
- Cannot customize notifications. Specifically, I live in Discord. I need more than just start/stop/pause and basic info from the printer.
- I want to tune the frequency and type of notifications (such as every hour, or every 10% during a long print)
- I need screenshots - so I don't have to look it up in a browser or app when I get the alert
- I need to send it commands (pretty much just status, and screenshot)
- All of this can be done using DiscordRemote (plugin)
- No camera streaming (locally, I'm not expecting this via PrusaConnect, but absolutely via PrusalLink)
- No (well documented and designed) API / plugin model / community development
#1 is a dealbreaker. No, THE dealbreaker. #2 sucks but can live without if I must (or work-around it annoyingly with other streaming solutions, HomeAssistant, etc). #3 would alleviate Prusa from having to do all the nuanced little feature details, hint, hint.
That said, here are the things I REALLY love about PrusaLink and OctoPrint sucks at:
- File Management is way nicer
- List of files is way, way better, namely because it includes thumbnails in the file list (not just for the one item printing)
- ETA (not just time remaining)
... and then of course if we add in the telem, history, and use of "teams" in PrusaConnect, that is a nice-to-have.
Please wake me up when PL has these things. In the meantime, don't take offense if you have a different opinion and are a PL fan. I'm a Prusa fan, and own two Prusas. I'm just sharing information in hopes it can be insightful, and I think PL has good potential.
