PrusaLink losing IP configuration?

I have a MK3S connected to my network through PrusaLink running on a RPi Zero 2W. Unfortunately I regularly run into the issue that the network connection lost while doing things like uploading new files. Somehow, the RPi loses its IP-address and becomes unreachable. If this happens during printing, the print will continue just fine.

I have had similar issues with my SL1S as well, albeit less frequently.

Are there any known issues with PrusaLink in regard to networking?

It's more likely an issue with the dhcp configuration on your router, what is probably happening in the lease for that ip address expires and the router allocates a new one

This is most definitely not what is happening. Lease times are well over an hour, and this problem can occur as soon as within 5 minutes after starting the machine and logging in. Also, my other devices (Duet printers, Smart Home things) are not suffering from this problem. I have a suspicion that it is related to heat, but I am not sure and I don't know how I can prove that suspicion.

Also, the IP address changes to one in the self-configured class. (169.254.1.0/16)

RE: PrusaLink losing IP configuration?

this is rather issue between router wifi and rpi zero w wifi setup or dhcp server on router vs dhcp client on rpi zero.

some suggestions:
- check wifi signal strentgh around the place your rpi zero is placed
- check signal strength on the rpi itself (first use 'ip link show' to get the wifi card name and then 'iwlist <wifi-card-name> scanning' to see more defails)
- first, try to move rpi away from any metal surface, ideally it should be something about 2cm over the printer or outside of the printer enclosure, line between rpi and router should not have any large water/metal objects (such bath tube or fridge etc.
- you may need to move device to different location if signal is below -80 dBm, or you may need to try different channels (especially lower ones)

See my GitHub and printables.com for some 3d stuff that you may like.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions.

It still strikes me as odd that this only seems to happen when the printer is printing and I'm trying to upload a file, but usually not when no print is happening. But you are right that we need to exclude the wifi signal as a potential problem source. I will try to analyze the wifi signal strength. The location of the printer is pretty much fixed though. There is no other place in my home where I can place it, and the RPi Zero 2W is on the printer. All I can perhaps do, if it is the signal, is turn it 90 degrees to have it face another way and perhaps improve signal that way.

Especially with the zero 2W connected so close to the noisy einsy, the wifi is impaired quite a bit. During printing even more so. I have attempted to create a 3d printed wifi shield that you would snap through a layer of aluminum foil, but the ground connection was sometimes spotty. That improved the wifi speed for me, idk if it ended up being 3x or what was the result but it definitely did something positive 😀
