How do you use the print queue?

Hi friends,

I have an MK4S+MMU3. From Prusa Slicer I upload jobs to my printer on Connect and I have an option of putting things into the queue. After they're in the queue --- what happens next? They don't seem to print on their own, but the file does upload to my printer. So I go to my printer, tap Print on its screen, find the file, and start the job. At the end of that job, Connect still shows the job entry in the queue. I've also tried choosing "Skip the queue" when selecting my printer on Connect but it seems to behave the same way.

It sure feels like I'm not using the print queue how it's intended but I'm stumped how to do it right. What (probably obvious!) steps or process am I missing?

Thanks,

Corey

RE:

I personally don't use it with my printers, but according to the overview at https://blog.prusa3d.com/prusa-connect-a-network-solution-for-remote-control-of-3d-printers_90364 :

Each printer has its own print queue that you can use to schedule print jobs

Prusa Connect can be used with any number of printers, from a single machine to a whole print farm. Each one of your registered printers has a print queue available, which can be filled with your desired print files. This means that if you’re printing a larger project, you can prepare and send all the G-codes to the printer at once. When a print job is finished, you just harvest the finished model and confirm the printer is ready for the next job in the queue. The print queue has a timeline to visualize when each print job finishes to easily keep track of your printing status on all printers at once!

I am also quite confused on how the print queuing system works. I think the purpose is just to help the user keep track of which prints they mean to print in which order. And that you have to activate the next print in the queue via Prusa Connect.

Slightly confusing if that is the case. It would make sense to start the next print in the queue directly on the machine, since you'll be standing next to the printer to unload and clean it when it's ready for the next print in the queue.

Found it! The missing piece is that you need to indicate that the printer is ready by manually clicking "set ready", either on the printer or through the web interface. This makes sense -- someone needs to remove the previous print and clean the print bed. If you've done that and the printer is really ready, you can set it ready on the Prusa Connect interface by the "Set Ready" button in the upper right portion of the web page. Or, on the printer, go to Controls and scroll down to the "Set ready" option. Then magically, the next print will begin!

One thing that I miss out on with the queue is being able to select which filament to use for the job. I have the MMU3 so when printing a single-filament job I'd like to select which filament to use, and I can do that when starting the job directly on the printer. If I use the print queue then the job will use the material directly as indicated in the gcode file. Which makes sense, of course - the point of the queue is to automate and make things run smoothly. But this means I need to remember to change the filaments requested in the slicer rather than later.

Actually, I seem to be wrong about this -- even with the print queue I'm given an option to select/confirm the filament to MMU mapping when I "set ready" on my printer. Awesome!
