What’s new on the Prusa Mini+ (That they didn’t mention)

As one of the first to receive a new Mini+ I thought I’d briefly share some of the differences I’ve noticed so far compared to my 1 year old Original Prusa Mini.

It might make the difference for anyone thinking of buying one.

1) Injection moulded parts. See picture) A good move in my opinion. Mainly the large plastic ends to the Y carriage.  (can only assume they were taking too long to print and delaying production)

2) Larger NEMA motors all round except for the extruder.

3) A newer screen with much better viewing angle and darker blacks.

4) New Belts.

These few things are in addition to the already announced SPINDA sensor and Y carriage bearing holders. I had a horrible time with the old sensor so this new one is a god send. Faultless so far.

My Mini+ doesn't have the injection molded parts - only printed!

What is the difference between the belts?

Mini with FW:4.4.1 + SuperPINDA + Bondtech Heatbreak + PC4-M8 couplers + 1 piece boden

Thats interesting, may I ask when did you order. I ordered on the 19th Dec so I hope to also get the moulded parts they look much better.

Thats bad luck.  Its possible I suppose that the parts were just not ready in time for early orders.

Possibly only the supplier.  But the toothed inside is a red brown colour and the outside black.  Its possible that the toothed inside is coated for wear protection or friction reduction.  Maybe this is because people have a noisy Y axis but this new one is still a bit creaky at speed.

I ordered at the end of November.  It wasn't due to be shipped until the end of January but (Speculation) I think Prusa decided to jump all the UK orders to the front of the queue due to the uncertainty of Brexit and the possibility of owing uncharged duty.  Although as it has turned out not much is actually going to change as the UK has remained part of the single European market and imports and exports should still move freely.

Interestingly the dated print out of the printers testing was the day before it was delivered so it was tested boxed and delivered all in 24hrs from the Czech Republic.  Prusa really on the back foot with getting them out as fast as possible.  But I was obviously pleased.

My family ordered mine in mid October and it came in a week before Christmas.

I ordered on the 17th December and have just received it.  That's exactly 2 weeks which I'm well chuffed! Brexit helps in this case!

I can confirmed all the observations you have mentioned are also on my mini+. However I'm not sure how you know about the larger motors though? Not that I'm complaining.

Yeah the stepper motors might not be bigger or even more powerful they just have more "sections" than the old ones. Hopefully there is an improvement somewhere in there.

Are you sure. That would mean that the Mini + needs its own firmware.
All the step values are no longer correct.

If what you are saying is correct then I guess the difference is just cosmetic.

Not sure how I feel about the injection molded parts since isn't one of the points of the reprap project to have as many of the printers parts as possible be 3d printable? I mean I guess you could still download the stl files and print the parts yourself. I can see them going this route though if the 3d printing of the parts is just taking too long to keep up with the orders. These parts are some of the largest plastic pieces on the printer and probably take a significant amount of time to print and with more time to print, also means more time for a print failure which means maybe they were also possibly having yield issues as well as the long time to print.

That said I wonder if an stl of this injection molded part is or will be made available? I do like the look of it and would not mind trying to print them for my printer.

Its a difficult thing to print.  The honeycomb front is all different heights.  You'd have to change the orientation from the original printed part which is printed logo down.

could you check if they changed something in the hotend?

Especially the heat break - is it longer or shorter? What is the length of inner PTFE tube ?

@pinkie-pie

All looks the same to me. As per usual the hot end was either not assembled correctly or the ptfe tube has already shrunk slightly due to thermal creep. Extrusion issues after just a few hours of printing. The bondtech heat break is supposed to reduce the thermal creep. The hot end is the weak part of the mini if you ask me. Could do with an all metal one.

Once you get used to it and know what to look for it’s not too bad to strip it down, cold pull, move the heartbreak up and recompress the ptfe a little. The worse thing is not knowing what’s causing your issues and spending hours changing settings in prusaslicer when it’s actually the hardware.

Only the Y axis front and back parts are injection moulded on mine. Maybe the plan to IM more parts in the future.

Think the motors are the same but visually slightly different.

Just received my mini+ and was disappointed to find that it had injection moulded parts.
They make the machine look cheap. 😟 😥 👎

Gonna print proper 3D-printed ones and replace ASAP.

Thats great news.... well for me I think the injection moulded parts are more professional looking. I will be annoyed if mine arrives without them..

Just wished it had more ejection parts. Makes the unit have a more finished look. If you want spares then you can print them out. I personally would rather see injection moulded bits
